For the Birds and Bunnies

Happy Fiber Arts Friday!  Despite a couple of really windy days and a few cooler evenings this week, I think spring has finally sprung!  I see some green poking out from our muddy yard, the birds are singing sweet melodies and the sun is shining today.

Those birds having been singing so much, they reminded me to finally do this.

Untitled

I stuffed one of my suet holders full of yarn scraps in hopes they will weave together some very colorful nests this year.

Untitled

I'm not sure if I'm too late with my offerings or if the colors are too loud (hello birdies, I even shared some Madelinetosh with you... do you know what that costs?!), but it doesn't appear as though they've taken much yet.  Although the wind sure has, so I guess we'll wait and see.

As for where those scraps came from, well I've been working hard to make a conscious effort at finding more and more time with my needles.... and, uh-hum, actually getting projects off  my needles.  I still have flare-ups of startitis, but I'm working on that.  The latest to come off my needles was this sweet Bunny Blankie Buddy.

Pattern is from the 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders book.  Yarn is Heaven from Plymouth, with a tiny bit of Noro for the eyes.  It used up just under 2 skeins of the Heaven, including what I used to stuff the head (this yarn is so soft it made perfect sense).  The results were a super squishy, fleece-like bunny blankie that made the perfect gift for a special little lady's first Easter.

I think it's safe to say she loves her new buddy... which makes me smile just as much as she does!

While I do have many projects on the needles, my current concentration is on the Airy Summer Infinity Scarf.  I thought it would make a great warmer weather accessory.  I'm using Cascade Ultra Pima Paints in the Desert Sage colorway (and, yes, my favorite project bag).

Pre-game #knitting on my #airysummerinfinityscarf in #Cascade #UltraPima #cotton Let's go boys, game 4! #GoBs #bruins #playoffhockey #knitstagram

I actually stepped away from my usual color comfort with this one.  While the picture doesn't really show it well, it's a beautiful mix of sage green, cream, and taupe.  I tend to lean towards the purples, blues and reds, but thought this would be more summery for sure.  I just started the second welt last night and am already loving how it's knitting up.

Back to that startitis thing... I received my April Yarn Box and Loopy Ewe April Spring Giftables boxes this week.

Received my April #yarnbox today and although I was really hoping for the purple, I got the blue/teal and LOVE it! #Fyberspates #yarn from UK #knitstagram #stashenhancement #merino #knitting now... What to make with this 436 yards of DK?!

Received the second #LoopyEwe #spring giftables club box! #love #SocksThatRock #Yarn #spindlecatstudio #ThingAMaHook #knitstagram #getyourkniton

Now, what to make, what to make.... Although I still haven't cast on anything with my previous Yarn Box yarn yet, so I'm not sure how quickly I'll get to these.  I did try to cast on Painted with last month's Loopy Ewe spring kit the other night, only to realize I bought two of the same size needle tips (this pattern is knit with two size needles at the same time).  Ooops.  I'll have to exchange those at the shop on Tuesday.  At least it kept me working on the infinity scarf in the meantime.

How about you?  What's on your needles or soon to be off?  Are you driving anyone crazy with decisions? My poor baby Zeus is exhausted just listening to me mumble about all this fibery goodness...  Enjoy your Friday!

Zeus says Good Morning IG! I wish I could curl back up with my #pillow like he has with my #Brookstone #NAP pillow that he loves so much! #dogstagram #ilovemyseniordog #ilovemydogs #morning

Happy Earth Day

Happy Earth Day!  Is your city/town, school or workplace holding any special events today?  I'll admit, I don't know of any events near me, but I am sure there are plenty.  You can check out the Earth Day Network to find out more if you'd like.

I'll also admit that we're certainly not the greenest we can be, however I am trying to make small changes in our day-to-day lives.  After all, every little bit counts

ReUsies3I've been using my Re-Usies quite a bit lately.  I reviewed these reusable bags for the blog two years ago - and have since purchased a few more for myself, as well as some for gifts - however, it wasn't until this year that I really started to use them.  In fact, I'm using at least one nearly every day when packing my lunch.  Not only am I saving money on disposable snack and sandwich bags, but I feel like I'm doing a little to help the environment and my lunch has a little flare to it (I have a set of the uber cute Aarrff! bags that I adore).  And the 100% cotton bags are super easy to clean too.  When I linked their site just now, I noticed they have quite a few fun, new prints too.  Check them out... not only are they great for human snacks, they make great on-the-go dog treat bags as well!

Another little thing I'm doing lately is trying to reduce my energy consumption.  I will admit that I still leave the television on all day for the dogs while we're at work, however I'm working hard at being more cautious of leaving lights on, having the heat or air conditioning up too high (our entire house is run on electric, so this is not only earth friendly, but a huge money saver), unplugging rarely used appliances, etc.  During a typical winter, I have 2 rather expensive electric bills, but this winter I had five higher-than-normal bills that really put a crimp in the budget.  Finding ways to reduce costs while still keeping warm (or cool as summer approaches) is important to me.

UntitledAnd, of course the dogs are always trying to be a little greener.  You know, with self-fertilizing the lawn, digging up the weeds, barking at the birds (I'd like to think this is to prevent them from pooping on the cars, which reduces our carbon footprint by having to wash them less often)... And, all four quite enjoy when I turn that television off and we go outside and soak up the fresh air and sunshine.

What little things do you do in your normal daily routine to reduce your carbon footprint?

Officer Sean Collier was an old kart racing friend... and a true hero.  At 2:49 pm Eastern time today, would you please observe a moment of silence for Sean, Martin, Krystle and Lu, as well as the 250+ injured during this cowardly act?
