REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: NEeMA - Watching You Think

NEeMA - Watching You Think
Where to Find: NEema.ca

Born of Egyptian and Lebanese descent, singer/songwriter NEeMA has crafted something deeply personal and precious with her sophomore LP, Watching You Think.  A sleek combination of lightly orchestrated folk, intelligent poetry, warm production, and endearing, almost vulnerable vocals make it an instant classic in the genre.

NEeMA has been an active humanitarian for several years; she’s spent time with the Dali Lama and Mother Teresa, as well as working with children in Egypt and tribal elders in Wekweti. Her selfless spirit and experiences have clearly inspired her music, as Watching You Think reveals the singer/songwriter as a kindred spirit in the likes of Joni Mitchel, Bob Dylan, and Paul Simon.

For those of you wondering what we're doing reviewing NEeMA's CD here at Lapdog Creations... yes, there is a dog involved!  NEeMA wrote the song "Elsa's Lullaby" about her dog Elsa, a former stray she took in from the cold streets of Northern Canada. The song is an endearing depiction of the relationship between pet and owner, and a testament to the triumphant spirit of rescued animals everywhere. You can watch the video below...

NEeMA reminds me a little bit of a mellower Lisa Loeb (who I adore) and I find her tribute to Elsa both inspiring and heartwarming... plus, I adore the video!  Some of her lyrics are very close to home... "remember when I took you in, you were just a tiny little thing, you grew into my closest friend with uncanny compassion" and "now I watch you sleep by the door, curled up on some hotel room floor and I grieve a little at the brevity of your time here with me."

NEeMA is currently on tour in Europe, opening for Joe Cocker, Jeff Beck, Cyndi Lauper and Elton John!  You can check out photos and catch up on the latest happenings via her website and blog.

Turning Left AND Right

Happy Monday!  I'm a little sunburned and a lot tired after one busy weekend!  Photos from the Bruins Stanley Cup Championship parade, the Stone Zoo "A Wild Affair" fundraiser and yesterday's NELCAR road course race at NHMS to come as soon as I have twenty minutes to download them all soon...

In the meantime, check out Matt's first interview/article over on MaineRacing.com.  I couldn't be more proud that he included FOR dog rescue in the article!  The article, along with that little cup brought back home to Beantown last week, caught the attention of the folks at NHMS.  After they spoke with Chris, the guy who wrote it (he's also the official NELCAR photographer), to ask if they could use the article, they sent over not one, but two of their own reporters to interview Matt post-race; one written, one video.  While our Bruins paint scheme has gotten attention at every race, yesterday it was non-stop.  Matt signed his first autographs for fans and might have even spent more time talking hockey than racing.

Since I don't have this weekends photos downloaded yet, I'll use this as a catch-up opportunity.  These shots are from the first NHMS road course race on May 22nd.  It was Matt's first time doing a road course... and his first time racing in the rain.  The road course races are the only ones we do in the rain...

Is Your Dog Cool?

Happy Friday!!!  I'm in the middle of a super-crazy-busy weekend that started last night... or actually, Wednesday night if you count staying up past my bedtime to watch the Bruins win the Stanley Cup!

My Brown Newfies reminded us about My Dog is Cool and the pledge today.  While we have taken the pledge, we haven't taken our pictures yet, but will do that asap.

MDIC_poster_8x11

Will you join us in pledging to keep your pack safe, as well as to help educate others?  I printed off these flyers to keep on hand last year and have just done the same again.  I am glad that I only had to leave a handful on cars last year, and just hope that number doesn't increase.  There was one instance when I had to go inside of a store and have a woman paged while another good samaritan tried to break into her car to get the poor little painting dog out on a sweltering day.  The woman was none too pleased and swore at us, told us we didn't know what we were talking about, her overheated dog was just fine, etc.  But you know what?  When I followed her to the next store, ready to call the police if she left that poor dog in the boiling car again, she got out, looked at me as if to say "OK, I get it" and took her dog into the store with her.  Hopefully the education lesson stuck with her.

OK, time for some Friday Fill-Ins...

1. One of my favorite birthday presents was my emerald ring that we had custom set in white gold (instead of yellow)... or wait, was that a Christmas present???  oh boy... .

2. Thomas saved and we won 4-0, it was as simple as that.

3. The moon always rises.

4. The NHL.com order I placed yesterday morning includes our Stanley Cup Champions official locker room hats, a keychain and a few tees for me.  (Dear NHL, please ship ... fast!)

5. I was tempted by ice cream.

6. Explore, see/do new things, eat the local cuisine, relax and find a LYS (where they hopefully have some locally spun, dyed or otherwise made yarn or notions to take home) are some of the things I like to do on vacation.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to catching up on sleep, tomorrow my plans include a parade and a fundraiser and Sunday, I want to have great weather for a great day of racing!
