Homemade vs Handmade - many crafters debate this on a daily basis.  It seems the term homemade gets a bad rap in the crafting community.  Some suggest that there is little value in homemade things, but great value in handmade.  Others talk about how they strive to ensure their creations look handmade, and not homemade.  

Regardless of whether or not you see anything substandard with the term homemade, we all know that the key to knitting beautiful pieces is in the details. Just as choosing one cast on or bind off over another can greatly change the look of your finished piece, so can the right increase or decrease technique.

Cast On, Bind Off, published three years ago, remains one of my go-to reference books to this day. The guide is indispensable, and one of the reasons I was so excited to learn of Storey Publishing's follow up, Increase, Decrease.

While nearly every knitting pattern calls for increases and decreases, many of them don't specify which of the many possible techniques to use.  "Increase 1" -- sure, but is that a M1?  Should I work into the front and back of the same stitch? While either option will render the same technical results - having one more stitch on your needles - they will not render the same visual appeal.  Different increases and decreases can greatly alter the look of your finished product.  After all, many were designed to improve the look of a finished pieces, so long as they are properly used with appropriate stitch patterns and shaping issues.

Whether you're just looking for the easiest, most effective way to increase or decrease, or if you want it to be a noticeable (or, in many cases, unnoticeable) design element, Increase, Decrease is where you'll find the answer!

Increase, Decrease is a spiral-bound 6" x 7" book, making it a handy reference guide that can be tossed in your knitting bag and taken anywhere you go. I really appreciate the spiral binding, which allows the open book to lie flat... which means I don't have to fuss to keep a book open while I'm trying to follow along with instructions! After all, we do need two hands to knit!  As an added "it's-going-to-be-thrown-in-a-lot-of-knitting-bags" think-ahead, the corners are rounded, helping to prevent sharp edges and tangles.

As someone who has vowed to get rid of the things I haven't used - or worse yet, seen - in years, I can really appreciate that statement. 

The tips and tricks in Clear the Clutter, Find Happiness cover just about every aspect of your home.  From closets to drawers, paperwork to toiletries, socks to scarves, and so much more!  There are a lot of great ideas for finding extra storage, and some brilliant organizational tips. 

I love the "Hot, Warm, Cold" rule. Essentially, frequently used items are considered "hot" (think the television remote), occasionally used items are "warm" (perhaps a cookie sheet), and rarely used items are "cold" (something like last year's tax return or your lobster pot). Hot things should live in a handy spot, while it's okay to put warm things in a lower cabinet or hallway pantry. Cold things can go in the attic, basement or some other out of the way space. This makes perfect sense, yet I'm quite sure that I'm not the only one who has "cold" items taken over coveted counter and shelf space... right?

Another "makes perfect sense and why aren't I already doing that?" tip in Clear the Clutter, Find Happiness involves linking chores to daily activities.  For instance, when you're brushing your teeth, rinse out the sink and wipe off the faucet. Or, when you stop for gas, empty out the trash bag in your car.  Sounds simple, doesn't it?

I am honored to have been asked to be a part of the Faux Taxidermy Knits blog hop.  Not only do I get to review this super creative knitting book, I also get to give away a copy to one of you (more about that later)!

I first became aware of Louise Walker's fun designs through her Instagram feed where she regularly posts photos of her hand-knit critters.  Having ooh'ed and ahh'ed at just about every picture posted, I was very excited when I heard she was working on a book of her patterns!

Faux Taxidermy Knits is a collection of 15 unique designs, divided into 2 sections: Wearables and Habitat.

The Wearables section includes the Fox Stole pictured on the cover, an intermediate project.  I can't help but chuckle at the description, "Drape this faux fur stole over your shoulders to release the foxy lady within."  Indeed!

If you're ready to channel your inner Davy Crockett, the Raccoon Hat is just what you need!  This beginner project is a fun one that you could whip up in no time while watching TV. Talk about a cute way to stay warm this winter - just add comfy sweater, jeans and boots!


Maybe you like to live life on an even wilder side?  The Wolf Headdress is for you!  You'll certainly turn heads while keeping your own warm this winter.

If you're not quite ready to wear your wild side, perhaps the Crocodile Make-Up Bag is more your style.  This cute little number is ethical and adorable!

I think this is incredibly cool!  Not only do you have the satisfaction of supporting a rescue dog in need (all while making your dog incredibly happy with his or her new treats and toys), but you actually see that dog and read that dog's story.  One word; brilliant.

Purina #LightandHealthy Survey Results + GIVEAWAY + COUPON

Pet obesity has been on the rise in the US in recent years... in fact, it's now reaching epidemic levels.  In order to better understand what's going on, Purina Dog Chow Light & Healthy conducted a nationwide survey asking dog owners questions about their perception of their pet's weight, as well as exercise and feeding habits.

This study was conducted online in April among a general US population of 1,000 adults, ages 18-55+, who own a dog.  The results identified a large gap between owners who understand and acknowledge their pet's weight problem, compared to the actual number of dogs that are overweight (as reported by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention).  

I'd like to share some of the results Purina discovered with you.  While I'd like to say the numbers are surprising to me, they really are not.

Let's talk about perception first.  While 85% of dog owners surveyed believe they have an understanding of the nutritional guidelines that should be followed for themselves, only 76% believe they have an understanding of equal guidelines for their dog.  If you don't know something, wouldn't you ask your veterinarian or do some research?

Even more baffling, just 22% believed their dog is overweight - a stark contrast to the harsh reality that 53% of US dogs are actually overweight

Of those 22% who felt their dog is indeed overweight, 24% don't know how to manage this issue, while 78% have taken some course of action to manage their dog's weight.  According to 36% of those surveyed, their first course of action in trying to get their dog to lose weight was to feed the dog smaller portions of the same dog food.

Let's face it, despite 85% of the owners surveyed believing they know the correct signs to determine if their dog is at a healthy weight or not, that is just not the case.  There are thousands of dog owners out there who just don't know - or won't acknowledge - that their dog is overweight.  Education is key...

As a concerned pet parent of 4, I'm always reading dog food labels, comparing them over and over again, as I try to find the best nutrition possible for my furkids - and my wallet.  Each of my dogs has different dietary needs - whether it be due to allergies, age, activity level or even size of the actual kibble - so finding a "one size fits all" kibble can be tough...

Petbrosia was developed, like most innovative dog products these days, out of a need for something different for the creators' own pets.  You can read their story here.  They use  veterinarian and nutritionist designed algorithms to understand your pet’s unique nutritional needs. Users answer a few questions about their pet - breed, age, weight, energy level, allergies, and other health concerns - and Petbrosia works their magic to identify your pet’s key nutritional needs.

When it comes to actual ingredients, Petbrosia uses "only the highest quality, all-natural ingredients, grown and raised by farmers across America, and carefully selected for your pet’s individual needs."  This includes superior proteins, premium fruits and vegetables, quality carbohydrates, Petbrosia's own mineral blend, vitamins and supplements such as Glucosamine and Chondroitin, probiotic extracts, and essential fats and oils.

After some consideration, I felt Teutul would be my best test subject for a custom blend and I proceeded to fill out his Pet Profile on their website.  It was fairly simple and not at all time consuming.  Just a few days later, a box showed up on my doorstep, along with a print out of Teutul's Custom Blend information inside.  The information sheet includes everything you'd see on a regular dog food bag, including ingredients, content (fat, fiber, protein, calorie, etc.), as well as Tut's custom feeding instructions. 

The first thing I noticed about Petbrosia's food was how tiny the kibbles were.  This is a bonus for those of us with dogs who have this special need (or tiny furkids). The second thing I noticed was how interested Tut was in his special blend!  He sure seems to love it. 

While I do think Petbrosia is a fantastic idea, especially for those dogs who can't eat just any 'ole dog food, I have to say that at this stage, their options are still very limited.  I was disappointed when I found out that the only protein available when we ordered was chicken.  While that's okay (still not preferred) for Tut, I realize it's a big no-no for many dogs.  The good thing is I hear they are adding a fish protein very soon.  But... that still only leaves 2 protein options.  For a truly customizable dog food, I would like to see at least 4 or 5 proteins offered.

Then there's the price to think about.  Again, for those of us with special dietary needs, we already know and are more than willing to spend extra.  Petbrosia custom blends range from $2.99 - $4.98 per pound, depending on how much you buy.  Shipping is about $4.95 - $9.90, however if you sign up for their Gold Club (automatic delivery schedule), you'll receive free shipping on 5, 10 or 20 pound boxes.

Petbrosia does have amazing customer service!  They make sure to send you several e-mails to remind you the best way to switch your dog over to their food, and to check in to see how things going.  I also received a couple of phone calls, but I'll admit - I didn't answer the call or call them back.  The messages left were to check in to see if I had any questions, see how Tut liked his food, etc.
