Black & White Sunday: R-I-D-E
Happy Sunday! In honor of all the doggies who just can't get enough of car R-I-D-E-S, we just wanted to remind the humans not to take your dogs on summer days unless they will be in and out of the car with you all day. Remember, a non-running parked car quickly becomes an oven in the summer. Despite how much they beg us, sometimes it's just best to leave your pooch at home.

Purina #LightandHealthy Survey Results + GIVEAWAY + COUPON
Pet obesity has been on the rise in the US in recent years... in fact, it's now reaching epidemic levels. In order to better understand what's going on, Purina Dog Chow Light & Healthy conducted a nationwide survey asking dog owners questions about their perception of their pet's weight, as well as exercise and feeding habits.
This study was conducted online in April among a general US population of 1,000 adults, ages 18-55+, who own a dog. The results identified a large gap between owners who understand and acknowledge their pet's weight problem, compared to the actual number of dogs that are overweight (as reported by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention).
I'd like to share some of the results Purina discovered with you. While I'd like to say the numbers are surprising to me, they really are not.
Let's talk about perception first. While 85% of dog owners surveyed believe they have an understanding of the nutritional guidelines that should be followed for themselves, only 76% believe they have an understanding of equal guidelines for their dog. If you don't know something, wouldn't you ask your veterinarian or do some research?
Even more baffling, just 22% believed their dog is overweight - a stark contrast to the harsh reality that 53% of US dogs are actually overweight
Of those 22% who felt their dog is indeed overweight, 24% don't know how to manage this issue, while 78% have taken some course of action to manage their dog's weight. According to 36% of those surveyed, their first course of action in trying to get their dog to lose weight was to feed the dog smaller portions of the same dog food.
Let's face it, despite 85% of the owners surveyed believing they know the correct signs to determine if their dog is at a healthy weight or not, that is just not the case. There are thousands of dog owners out there who just don't know - or won't acknowledge - that their dog is overweight. Education is key...

Blogger Disaster Response Network: Catastrophic Floods in Bosnia & Serbia
As a member of The Blogger Disaster Response Network, I have been asked to help spread the word about the current response effort to the flooding in Bosnia and Serbia. (photos courtesy of World Vets)
Catastrophic floods following three days of extremely heavy rain this month have left large portions of Bosnia and Serbia submerged and millions of people and animals in desperate need of help. Thousands of animals have died from the immediate impact of the floods, but many more livestock and companion animals require urgent assistance.
World Vets is deploying to the region to provide support for animals that have been impacted by this disaster. Animals are often not the primary focus during massive disasters and World Vets is committed to bridging this gap and helping them during their greatest time of need. Social Media Tips for Shelters & Rescues
I've been working with dog rescues for several years now, mostly helping with adoptions and fostering some fantastic puppies and dogs throughout the years. I've seen rescues struggle with everything from fundraising to getting their information out to the public. Most of the rescues I've worked with are in the Southern states and adopt the majority of the pets out to New England states. This makes it near impossible to promote the rescue and pets in person.
Enter social media. A blessing for rescues and shelters everywhere, but especially for the type of rescues I've been working with.
In honor of International Pet Blogger Month presented by BlogPaws, I wanted to share a few tips on how rescues and shelters can maximize the use of social media.
1. Take Great Photos. "A picture is worth a thousand words" really rings true when it comes to showcasing homeless pets who are seeking a forever home. First impressions are so very important.
When someone is looking to adopt, chances are they are sifting through thousands of profiles online. More often than not, a single line list of pets pops up with a name, short description and thumbnail photo. That teeny-tiny little thumbnail photo needs to pop and catch their attention! So many times I've seen shelters post fuzzy, dark, unattractive photos. Sure, we all know how busy a rescuer is, but this is one aspect where you must make the time to get good photos! They need to be clear and bright... get outside and use natural light whenever possible! The subjects should be looking at the camera, happy and alert. The photos also need to be up to date. So often, especially with older pets who may take longer to adopt out, photos are old and "tired." Updating them will give the pet a fresh face in the adoption world!
Whenever possible, enlist the help of local photographers who may be willing to volunteer their time. Whether they're professionals or hobbyist, chances are they'll have great ideas for capturing photos that will help your pets stand out in a crowd.
I've retaken photos of many of the dogs we've fostered and had the rescues up date their pictures online. Remember, the cuter and more eye catching the photo, the more looks the pet is going to receive and the more chances she's going to have to find her perfect forever home!
2. Share Those Photos & Profiles. Seems simple enough, but so many shelters don't take advantage of this. Post them to Facebook, Tweet them, Pin them to a board on Pinterest, Blog them, Instagram them with a link to the pet's profile!
I'm known to share many pets on Facebook, as well as Tweet and Pin profiles often. I love my "Adopt Don't Shop" board on Pinterest! "Monkey see, monkey do" really comes into effect... once one person shares something, you know the ball keeps rolling as your friends and family start "liking" and reposting. Everyone loves a cute animal picture.... share, share, share!
3. You Tube is Your Friend. What's better than uber cute photos? Videos! Get out the cell phones or camera and take some short clips. Post them to the pets' profile pages, as well as on You Tube. You can even post short 15 second clips on Instagram.
Some pets just come across better in video than still pictures. Their personalities show through so much more in video. Take advantage of this powerful - and free! - tool that we all should get into the habit of using more. I started taking short clips of our foster dogs and having the rescues link them to their profiles... we instantly saw more hits on the profiles with videos attached!

Will You Remember Me? #LightForPets
Today is Remember Me Thursday... This global awareness campaign is designed to shine a light on orphaned pets everywhere by lighting candles (both real and virtual) across the world in honor of shelter pets who have lost their lives, as well as those waiting - and hoping - for their forever homes.

Animal-lovers and animal welfare organizations across the globe will unite on Thursday, September 26, 2013 (the fourth Thursday of September, annually) with a Remember Me Thursday pet candle-lighting ceremony. The candles, which will be lit on the exact same day across the world, will honor the millions of pets who lost their lives without the benefit of a loving home and shine a light on the millions of healthy pets who are still awaiting adoption. The Remember Me Thursday global awareness campaign encourages individuals to light a candle this day (literally or virtually) and to opt to adopt, reducing the millions of orphan pets euthanized each year.

The BEST Day Ever!
Why is today THE best day ever, you ask? Well, because it's National Dog Day, of course!
National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by pet lifestyle expert Colleen Paige and is celebrated each year on August 26th. This day not only honors our family dogs and the working dogs who put our lives ahead of theirs on a daily basis, it also serves as a reminder to the public of the large number of dogs that need to be rescued each year.
Anyone who has ever loved a dog knows they love unconditionally and their loyalty is unwavering. Whether the family pet who is always by your side and wags his tail uncontrollably when you return home, or the working dog who is out their with law enforcement removing drugs from our streets, detecting bombs, or searching for victims in the middle of devastation, dogs put their lives on the line for us every single day. Today is a day of deep appreciation and admiration.
National Dog Day encourages "dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure - and embraces the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and abuse-free life." Additionally, the movement is against any kind of breed restriction legislation (BSL), and discourages people from purchasing dogs from pet stores, backyard breeders and puppy mills. Adopt, Don't Shop! There are millions of wonderful, loving dogs euthanized every year simply because they are unwanted. Please consider adopting on National Dog Day!
Three of the four Lapdogs are officially rescues (Zeus came from friends, and in a sense was a "rescue" as well when his original owners decided they couldn't keep him at just 7 weeks of age).
Aren't they just the happiest bunch ofmisfits "shelter dogs" you've ever seen (okay sure, I may be a little biased on this one)?

What's Essential Rescue Pet Photo Contest
We are very excited to tell you all about a Facebook project that is all about rescued pets and benefits Paws For Veterans!
Created by Nordic Naturals, the "What's Essential Rescue Pet Photo Contest" campaign is near and dear to my heart. After all, this is a photo contest for rescued pets! Three of the four Lapdogs are rescues (one local, two from the South) and I have been involved in dog rescue for several years now. Helping Those Who Help Others
We've all seen the tragic devastation in Moore, Oklahoma on the news this week, and we've all watched as so many search teams do what they do best - find and rescue survivors. I'm always intrigued by the search dogs and their handlers who jump into action with a moment's notice in situations like this. I've been following the efforts of The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation for quite a long time now and am always amazed by these resilient dogs and their loving handlers.

PDF donated $1,000 to the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) to help support their search dog teams that have been deployed to assist in the recovery efforts.
“The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) search dog teams are playing a major role in locating survivors and we are thankful we are able to donate funds to help support their lifesaving efforts,” says Kristen Smith, the Executive Director of the Planet Dog Foundation. “We couldn’t do it without the support from our customers whose purchases help raise money for PDF and enable us to provide grants to support the amazing ways service dogs are helping people in need,” adds Smith.
In 2012, PDF awarded a $10,000 grant to SDF to sponsor a new search dog team that is currently in training and based in Albany, New York. “The search dog team we fund will not be deployed to Oklahoma so we decided to award SDF an emergency grant to support the search dog teams that are assisting the recovery efforts,” says Smith.

Home For The Holidays... Iams Style!

Bloggers Unite for Dog Rescue
I was about to post my Monday Mischief posting when I realized that today has been reserved for a cause extremely close to my heart (and one I post about on a regular basis, of course): Bloggers Unite for Dog Rescue
As you know, I am a huge advocate of dog rescue and you'll often hear me utter the words "Adopt, Don't Shop." I'm not anti-breeder by any means and realize that for some folks, they want a purebred XYZ pup. However, I am against pet stores, puppy mills and "backyard breeders." There are far too many lives out there ending far too soon (and sadly, not all humanely) simply because people don't spay or neuter their pets. I see photos and stories of far too many puppies and adult dogs who's "day is up" - yes, puppies are put down simply because a shelter somewhere felt they were there too long without being adopted.
Three of my four children are shelter rescues. Zeus, was somewhat of a "rescue," however it was friends of ours who had a liter of puppies. He was originally given to another family who realized they weren't ready for a dog... we stepped in and took him at that point (just 7 weeks old). About 8 months later, we decided Zeus' needed a canine companion and we adopted Lola from our local humane society.
Then, we failed at fostering... twice. Teutul, our Tennessee boy, was our first ever attempt at fostering and we failed pretty much immediately. Sophie (from Missouri) was our second failed foster... we like to think she chose us.
I often get asked how we are able to foster dogs and let them go to their forever families. While I'll never claim it's an easy thing to do - it is not - and it's certainly not something for everyone, it's what I can do to help save lives. I've shed many tears and my heart breaks each time we have to send another foster baby off to their forever home, but I know it's the right thing to do. By doing so, we are able to play a part in saving another life. It certainly helps when the forever families stay in touch with us - they send photos, videos and sometimes we even get to have play dates with our fosters. There's nothing quite like the feeling of seeing one of our foster babies so happy with their new family! A couple of them actually remember us when we see them - and there's definitely nothing quite like having them very excited to see us, and showing how much they love their forever family at the same time. That is the perfect situation!
It certainly helps that our pack is well adjusted and has graciously welcomed their many foster brothers and sisters into our home...
For everyone who tells me they want to help, but don't think they could foster - and give up - a baby, I tell them there is so much more you can do to help a rescue. Donate: financially or otherwise. Shelters are often seeking things like old comforters, sheets & towels, paper towels, postage stamps, plastic bowls, toys, etc. Volunteer: shelters need folks to help clean kennels, walk dogs, answer the phone, fundraise, man tables at adoption events, etc. Spread the word: in a social media driven world, this is easier than ever - help spread the word about animals in need of foster homes and adoption by Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, your blog, etc.
If you're looking for a new furry companion, please consider a shelter dog. Check out this website. If you know me personally, of course you know to come to me to help in your search as well (I truly am that crazy dog lady... whenever anyone I know is looking for a dog, has a friend/relative who's looking or some dog related question, I get the email, Facebook message, etc. - and that's okay... I love helping match people to a perfect furbaby!). Mr. Booth (better known as Boo or Boo Boo in our house) is still with us and looking for her forever home. In fact, the rescue just reduced his adoption fee to help. Of course, he is fitting in quite well here... almost too well as you can see by his "Lazy Sunday" picture with Lola.
Boo went on a little adventure to the feed store yesterday and picked out a couple of new toys... Sophie sure did kept a watchful eye on that tiny little squeaky bunny he brought home.
I hope you will consider joining me in Bloggers Unite for Dog Rescue and do what you can to help shelter dogs. Personally, I'd adopt them all if I could. :) Thank you...

Lennox
I don't normally make a habit of posting twice in one day, but the story of Lennox has really torn at my heart strings today. This innocent boy was taken from his loving family over two years ago, simply because of the way his body looked. They fought the law all this time, and sadly, today the law won and murdered Lennox.
The beautiful boy lived in Belfast, where ignorant BSL laws prevent anyone from owning a pit bull - or apparently, anything that may possibly be a pittie. Lennox was not a pittie, he was an American Bull cross. Shame on you Belfast... I used to want to visit Ireland, but don't think so anymore. The Council workers claimed Lennox was "unpredictable and dangerous," yet there are photos of the same workers hugging and playing with him -- would you put your face in that of a dog you thought was "dangerous?" Victoria Stilwell wanted to take the dog to the US and let him live his life out at a sanctuary - I don't believe she even received an acknowledgement about her request. The Council held Lennox for two years in subpar conditions, then would not even allow his loving family to be with him in the end... from what I'm reading, they won't even allow them to see his body. Can you imagine this happening to your baby... just because of the way he or she "looks?"
Lennox's story made me cry this morning, but when I just saw this image on the Save Lennox facebook page, I became a blubbering baby.
Please... hold your furbabies a little closer today in Lennox's honor... and do whatever you can to stand up against BSL. Rest in Peace beautiful boy....... may you find the happiness you deserve over the Bridge.

We're Cool - Are You?
We posted about My Dog Is Cool last year and were sadly just reminded of how much we need to continue spreading the word. Our local news is reporting two dogs died during this heat wave after being left in the car by their owner. My first reaction is extreme anger and wishing for "an eye for an eye" - someone lock up that owner in the same hot car please. My second reaction is extreme sadness... can you even imagine what a painful death that was for those babies? It is terrible when people continue to not surprise me by their ignorance and stupidity. Very sad...I've been driving around with a stash of these flyers in my glove box for over a year, and I'm not afraid to leave one when necessary. I've been known to go into stores to have owners paged, and to call the police when that doesn't work. Fortunately, those are the only steps I've been forced to take thus far... but I always have my eyes and ears open for furbabies in trouble this time of year.
Please... continue to spread the word and keep furbabies safe during the summer.
