Remember Me Thursday #LightForPets

Today is Remember Me Thursday.  Will you take a few moments out of your day to join me in lighting a virtual candle to remember the millions or orphan pets who lost their lives over the past year?  This pet awareness campaign, designed to promote pet adoption, is a cause near and dear to our hearts. 

Remember Me Thursday is a worldwide coalition of pet adoption organizations, celebrities and people like you, who raise awareness about the plight of millions of orphan pets around the world waiting for forever homes.

By lighting a candle on Remember Me Thursday, September 25, 2014, you are remembering those pets who have lost their lives but you are also shining a light on orphan pets in need of homes right now.

The first Remember Me Thursday took place last year, on September 26, 2013.  We participated, as did so many others.  In fact, 139 countries united to support the movement, with over 100,000 individuals around the globe holding candle-lighting ceremonies of their own, spreading the message through social media, visiting the Remember Me Thursday website and lighting a virtual candle.

Today is Remember Me Thursday... This global awareness campaign is designed to shine a light on orphaned pets everywhere by lighting candles (both real and virtual) across the world in honor of shelter pets who have lost their lives, as well as those waiting - and hoping - for their forever homes.

Animal-lovers and animal welfare organizations across the globe will unite on Thursday, September 26, 2013 (the fourth Thursday of September, annually) with a Remember Me Thursday pet candle-lighting ceremony. The candles, which will be lit on the exact same day across the world, will honor the millions of pets who lost their lives without the benefit of a loving home and shine a light on the millions of healthy pets who are still awaiting adoption. The Remember Me Thursday global awareness campaign encourages individuals to light a candle this day (literally or virtually) and to opt to adopt, reducing the millions of orphan pets euthanized each year.

Please join me in spreading the word and helping to lend a voice to those who can't speak for themselves.  You can light a virtual candle, and spread the word through social media.  #LightForPets 

Lennox

I don't normally make a habit of posting twice in one day, but the story of Lennox has really torn at my heart strings today.  This innocent boy was taken from his loving family over two years ago, simply because of the way his body looked.  They fought the law all this time, and sadly, today the law won and murdered Lennox.

The beautiful boy lived in Belfast, where ignorant BSL laws prevent anyone from owning a pit bull - or apparently, anything that may possibly be a pittie.  Lennox was not a pittie, he was an American Bull cross.  Shame on you Belfast... I used to want to visit Ireland, but don't think so anymore.  The Council workers claimed Lennox was "unpredictable and dangerous," yet there are photos of the same workers hugging and playing with him -- would you put your face in that of a dog you thought was "dangerous?"  Victoria Stilwell wanted to take the dog to the US and let him live his life out at a sanctuary - I don't believe she even received an acknowledgement about her request.  The Council held Lennox for two years in subpar conditions, then would not even allow his loving family to be with him in the end... from what I'm reading, they won't even allow them to see his body.  Can you imagine this happening to your baby... just because of the way he or she "looks?" 

Lennox's story made me cry this morning, but when I just saw this image on the Save Lennox facebook page, I became a blubbering baby.

Please... hold your furbabies a little closer today in Lennox's honor... and do whatever you can to stand up against BSL.  Rest in Peace beautiful boy....... may you find the happiness you deserve over the Bridge.

Help Save Snoopy!!!

Dog lovers, parents and friends... would you please take just two minutes of your time to sign this petition and help SAVE SNOOPY? 

If you haven't heard the story, watch the video here Campaign To Save Deltona Dog Goes Viral - Video - WESH Orlando, but to sum things up, Snoopy was attacked by an unleashed Jack Russell who got away from it's owner.  Of course Snoopy reacted to protect himself and his owner... and now Snoopy is the one sitting on death row while the aggressive Jack Russell is home with it's owners.  This is wrong on so many levels.

Just say ‘no’ to trapping of bobcats in state

My sources inform me that the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department intends to open up a fur trapping season on bobcats at the conclusion of its current research with the University of New Hampshire to estimate the state’s bobcat population.
And it has the nerve to ask the unsuspecting public to help achieve its objective.

In a recent press release, Fish and Game’s Mark Ellingwood asks people to report bobcat sightings to the department if you are “supportive of our research efforts.”

I don’t know about you, but I am certainly unsupportive of the research because Fish and Game intends to use the results to open up the now closed trapping and hunting seasons to bobcats.

If you are against the trapping and hunting of bobcats, then let Fish and Game know by signing the petition that 2,300 (I just signed and it's now up to over 2,500 signatures!) people already have signed to say “no” to trapping and hunting of New Hampshire bobcats - You can help save New Hampshire bobcats.

Happy National Puppy Day!

National Puppy Day is a special day, recognized on March 23rd annually, to celebrate the magic and unconditional love that puppies bring to our lives. But more importantly, it's a day to help save orphaned puppies across the globe and educate the public about the horrors of puppy mills, as well as further our mission for a national of puppy-free pet stores.

National Puppy Day was founded in 2006 by Pet Lifestyle Expert, Animal Behaviorist and Author, Colleen Paige, who is also the founder of National Dog Day and National Cat Day. This holiday, as well as others, are part of Colleen Paige's Animal Miracle Foundation & Network, a non-profit organization which offers financial assistance and educational programs ranging from pet cancer to fire safety and travel safety for kids and pets alike. AMF also hosts many wonderful holiday festivals and trade shows throughout each year and brings local shelter pets to these events hoping to find them a forever home

Manic Monday...

... the first of 2009! And since I'm still being lazy playing catch up and haven't downloaded any photos from Christmas or taken any of WIPs lately, I thought I'd share something that I got in an email forward this week...

I'll get to adding the "ice storm photos, part 3" aka "doggies longing for electricity" this Thursday for Dogs on Thursday...

To the wonderful angel(s?) out there who donated to the ASPCA through my fundraiser banner (at the top of this blog) this weekend and pushed me to reaching my goal... Thank You!!! I couldn't believe it when I just looked to see what the total was at and noticed it was showing 100% -- $1,000!!! The last I checked it was at $875. I don't know who you are, but thank you...... and thank you to everyone who's contributed to it during 2007 & 2008. It was a personal goal of mine to do this for ASPCA and see it reach 100%!

Saving the Michael Vick Dogs

Dogtown returns! The second season of the National Geographic Channel’s “DogTown” begins tonight at 9 pm ET/PT with the two-hour premier, “Saving the Michael Vick Dogs.” Check out Best Friends’ new DogTown web page.

The Humane Society of the United States, PETA and a chorus of supposed dog pundits said it couldn’t be done – that the 47 pit bulls rescued from Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels could not be reformed, and therefore needed to be euthanized.

Best Friends believed otherwise, and a U.S. District Court in Virginia agreed, placing 22 of the dogs with Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and the rest with various other rescue groups around the country. As the premier episode of the National Geographic Channel’s “DogTown” will show to millions of viewers this Friday, the dogs have bucked the naysayers and proven that a second chance, replete with the right training and nurturing, was what they needed to succeed.

Weekend Wrap Up...

Once again, congratulations to all of my contest winners! Prizes went out this morning and I hope you will enjoy them!

It was a cold & rainy weekend around New England. I spent Saturday night at Fenway (first time back to a game in about 4 years now) and it felt more like fall football weather! (excuse the "little people" photos... I didn't bring the camera due to the weather, these are cell phone pics)

I soon remembered why I'm much more of an action packed sports girl (translation: NASCAR, football and hockey)... baseball is pretty slow & boring to me! Don't get me wrong, this Boston girl will always root for her Red Sox (and I do enjoy catching a game in person every now and then), but if given the choice (especially with the need to sell your first born to get a ticket enormous ticket prices), I'd rather quinch my need for speed, see some good checks (fight, fight, fight!) or see the Brady bunch....

I don't want to get too much in to the weekend tragedy,and I don't know much about horses, but I do know that no animal should be run so hard they break both of their front ankles!!!! I've heard several takes on the story and understand Eight Belles was just 2 years old. Apparently, horses should not be raced until at least 4 years of age. There's also been lots of genetic crapola going on to produce the "fastest and strongest" horses... all in the name of greed for the all mighty dollar - ugh!!! Personally, I think if you want to run a race, then use your own 2 feet or an inanimate object, such as a car, boat or motorcycle. Rest in Peace Eight Belles...

Now I even have some actual knitting content to leave you with today! I'm working away on the Criss-Cross scarf for my ISE6 pal. I'm loving the way the Patons SWS is working up in this pattern...

After realizing that there was no way the pokey, always wanting to cast on something new, 'ole me I'd ever finish the Oriel Lace scarf for my pal in time for the deadline, I switched to this pattern and am glad I did. My pal loves winter colors and she lives in a cold winter climate, so I'm hoping this will be a perfect fit for her. I'm starting to think these scarves will also be in a few Christmas presents this year as well...

I'm still Clapping away, but am thisclosetobeingfinished!!! No updated pics, but it will be done in time to wear to the NH Sheep and Wool festival this weekend (so long as weather is appropriate for wearing) and I will get finished photos then! I spent yesterday working on the decrease rounds...

I'm about half way done with my first teddy bear sweater for the Granite State Knit-In donations. They collect "dressed" stuffed aniamls of all sorts, which are then donated to the NH State Troopers for their program (all troopers have a couple in their trunks to provide as needed to children). I plan to get at least a couple made...

Maybe it was the billboard strategically (genius!) placed near Oprah’s studio in Chicago, maybe it was one of the petitions, or maybe awareness about the issue is finally becoming a reality (thankfully!). This Friday, puppy mills will make it even further into the limelight. It’s one thing for a news station to do a show on the commercial pet breeding industry, but when Oprah’s talking about it—well, maybe pet stores and the breeders who supply them will see a difference in the demand.

But the real thanks goes to Main Line Animal Rescue in Pennsylvania. The rescue is known for not only their work in rescuing animals, but also their fantastic, edgy billboards. They pictured a Beagle in a dishwasher to show USDA cage sizes, they placed a billboard to welcome families to "Scenic Lancaster County—home to hundreds of puppy mills" (now that's my kind of rescue... with beautiful, caring, creative minds)

And they plunked a billboard right near Oprah’s studio, plainly asking her to tape a show about puppy mills.
Let’s help the Oprah show have the biggest impact possible!

Actions you can take before the show...

~ Get as many potential puppy buyers as possible to tune in to Oprah’s show—target people who may not know about puppy mills and/or may be shopping for a puppy. {and don't forget to encourage them to ADOPT - NOT SHOP!}

~ Take advantage of free classifieds by placing as many ads as possible (Craigs List, local news boards, etc) - or better yet, cross post this to your blog!

As you know, we were unable to let Sophie go ... but we will certainly continue to help as many rescue dogs as possible, even if it means we won't be able to foster very often this year. Press 1 if you think we are veterinarians and want free medical advice.

Press 2 if you know we are a rescue organization but want to save money and have us give you free, untrained medical advice anyway.

Press 3 if you make $200,000 a year but still want us to pay to spay the "stray" in your yard (house).

Press 4 if you have a 10-year-old dog and your 15-year-old son has suddenly become allergic and you need to find the dog a new home right away.

Press 5 if you have three dogs, had a baby and want to get rid of your dogs because you are the only person in the world to have a baby and dogs at the same time.

Press 6 if your dog is sick and needs a vet but you need the money for your vacation.

Press 7 if you just got a brand new puppy and your old dog is having problems adjusting so you want to get rid of the old one right away.

Press 29 if you previously had an outdoor only dog and are calling because she is suddenly pregnant.

Press 30 if you have done "everything" to housebreak your dog and have had no success but you don't want to crate the dog because it is cruel.

Press 31 if you didn't listen to the message asking for an evening phone number and you left your work number when all volunteers are also working and you are angry because no one called you back.

Press 32 if you need a puppy immediately and cannot wait because today is your daughter's birthday and you forgot when she was born.

Press 33 if your dog's coat doesn't match your new furniture and you need a different color or breed.

Press 34 if your new love doesn't like your dog and you are too stupid to get rid of the new friend (who will dump you in the next month anyway) instead of the dog.

Press 35 if you went through all these 'presses' and didn't hear enough. This press will connect you to the sounds of tears being shed by one of our volunteers who is holding a discarded old dog while the vet mercifully frees him from the grief of missing his family.
