Make Your Dog's Evening Walk Safer with #NiteIze

Disclosure: Nite Ize sent one NiteHowl to Lapdog Creations, free of charge, for review purposes. I was not compensated for this review and all opinions expressed are my own.

2015-10-12_10-02-12While fall is our favorite time of year, it's also that time of year where the days grow shorter and shorter. It's still light out when I leave work, but darkness is already falling far before we're ready and in just a couple of weeks we'll be turning the clocks ahead... then poof, there goes any chance of taking the dogs for a walk while it's still light out.

So, what to do to keep ourselves and our precious fur babies safe when walking after dark? I know some friends use headlamps, while others carry the trustee flashlight to light they way, but what about making Fido visible to oncoming traffic?

There are several gadgets available in most pet stores - reflective collars, jackets, and clip-on lights all come to mind. Sure they are all nice options, but none of them seem ideal. I don't want to change my dogs' everyday collars to reflective ones, and jackets can be expensive. Clip-on lights are handy, but don't make your dog visible from all angles.

Surely, there had to be a better option.  And, there is.

I was recently introduced to the NiteHowl LED Safety Necklace from Nite Ize, and have to say, this just might be one of the best options for nighttime walking yet!

The NiteHowl is not only the easiest, most convenient way to make your dog visible at night, but it's rather economical as well!  Click the link above and grab one at Amazon for less than eleven bucks (note, if you click through that link and purchase I will receive an extremely small commission)!

Illumination comes full circle - literally - with the NiteHowl. The durable LED safety necklace is made out of flexible polymer tube that you custom fit to your dog by trimming the tube to the correct size.  Then, slip it over your dog's head and you're good to go! Two bright red LEDs provide hours of nighttime fun - and most of all, safety. Battery life is a generous 60 hours, and the two alkaline batteries are replaceable.

With a simple press of the button - which is in a weather resistant housing - the entire collar lights up, making your pooch visible from all angles. A second press turns on the flashing option.  Teutul demonstrates both options in this short video.

I love having the option of a continuous glow or blinking, as different circumstances may call for one over the other. Plus, if you have multiple dogs in an off-leash area at night, this option can easily help to differentiate them.

This protective doggy Mama gives NiteHowl a big two thumbs up! Not only is it a cool, innovative product, but it's so easy to use and easy on your pocketbook as well!  I call that a win-win-win.

You may have noticed that we have not yet cut the tube for a custom fit.  I suspect Penny will be using the NiteHowl the most going forward, and didn't want to cut it before she was fully grown.  Although, I suspect we'll most likely purchase a couple more soon anyway.

I highly recommend you grab one for your pup today.  They also make fantastic holiday gifts for any dog parent!

*Excuse the crazy eyed dogs, but I had to use the flash to get the NiteHowl to show up best.  I attempted to "fix" the demon eyes, but that only made my kids look like aliens.

Glad you wrote that about cutting for fit - i thought it just sat around their neck and was wondering why it wouldn't fall off. Looks cool.

Both my Earl and Ethel have glowing collars. Brilliant idea.

We always used some "light device" when walking dogs in the dark.

Interesting idea. I know Mom loves watching us run around the yard with our illuminated neckwear in different colors. It is good to help stay safe in the dark.

Mr. N wears a human light-up wristband around his neck which serves the same purpose. It's nice to see one specifically for dogs!

This is a really great idea. Most of the streets in our neighborhood don't have much lighting and this is a wonderful idea!

What a terrific idea for these early nights. I am not a fan of it being dark so early, but walking would be safer with this necklace.

This product is a great idea! I have seen people walking their dogs in the dark while I'm out driving. It makes me really nervous behind the wheel because they aren't always easy to see. I love how simple this product is.

I walk at night and my dogs love to go with me. I recently bought them necklaces similar to this.

The first picture of Penny with the necklace and pumpkin is really funny with the flashy eyes!

Interesting product -- love things that keep our dogs safe, and walking in the Winter can be dangerous without something like this. Thanks for the excellent review!

This would be perfect for my sister's black Pom, she is really hard to see on a night walk.

We have a few LED lights from Nite Ize that attach to the pups' collars! This product sounds even better!

Great ideas! We just don't walk in the dark anymore. We used to use lights and led leashes, etc. but in the city its just safer for us to stay in. Love Dolly

What a good idea. We've tried the little light hooked to the collar but they got lost in the long hair. This I could wrap around the tail and let them wave it.

This sounds great! So important to be visible when walking after dark.

Excellent products for late night winter walks, but also if a dog runs off at the dog park or while on a walk. Shared to Pinterest & Twitter.
