Goodbye, Sweet Baby Boy

While we are not blogging much at all anymore (you'll find us on our social media channels on a regular basis instead), I simply cannot let the passing of our sweet Teutul go by without a proper post.

Saying goodbye to my sweet baby boy was never in our plans last week, but on Wednesday evening, September 5th, we found ourselves doing just that.

Black & White Sunday: Broken Hearts Part 2

Our house has become so eerily quiet.  Sure, Tut and Sophie bark and carry on at the mail lady or UPS truck.  Sure, they let us know when it's dinner time.  But, there's two very large barks missing, and four very broken hearts left behind.

Zeus, Mama is missing her moosey like crazy.  I'm lost without our morning breakfast routine... and, I've suddenly found myself with too much free time after all these months of rushing straight home from work to get your lunch and medicine.  I'd do anything to continue that strict routine of getting home early for you baby... anything at all.

I know you missed your sister tremendously, and imagine she missed you even more.  I do take some comfort in knowing you two are together again... romping, chasing squirrels, catching snow balls, lounging in the sun, sharing meals, and being the best buds you always were.  My heart is in pieces, but I'm so glad you both chose me to be your Mama.  I couldn't have asked for more loving, loyal fur-kids than the two of you.

Goodbye, my Happy Old Man

With an extremely broken heart and many, many tears, I seem to find myself typing these words once again just two months later. We made another heart wrenching decision last night, as we said goodbye to Zeus, allowing him to run free over the Bridge... no more pain, no more cancer.

Zeus ~ Forever our Happy Old Man
2001 ~ 2015

Zeus was my first fur-kid, my baby (sure, my family had pets while I was growing up, but he was my first baby).  He's been by my side for what feels like forever.  We bought our home, moved in, and less than a month later we brought home a 7 week old sweet baby boy.  From that day forward, he loved us unconditionally and would do anything for his humans. (His Daddy might not love that I posted the pic below right, but it's one of my favorites)

I do realize that Zeus lived a very long life, much longer than ever expected, and am so happy that he was here with us to celebrate his 14th birthday. (Did you see how much he enjoyed that cake?!?!) But, it's still not long enough. My boy endured so many things during those 14 years, more than any one dog should. Even when he was a puppy he went through a spurt of "growing pains" (the vet had a more clinical term for it, but basically he was growing too fast).  I'm not sure if that resulted in his later TPLO surgery and arthritis, but I'd guess so.

No matter the health challenge, Zeus faced everything head on, always with a tail wagging and a remarkable attitude.  Seriously, he always wagged his tail at the vet.  He loved Dr. C and his "girls" and would get so excited to see everyone.  He loved that they all knew his name and showered him with attention.  A few months ago, a tech was taking him for blood work and as soon as the door opened, we heard 2 or 3 voices coming from the back "Oh it's Zeus!!!" - "Hi Zeus, you good boy!" - it made my heart melt and we smiled so much.

Zeus always loved being outside, lounging in the sunshine.  Whether it was in the driveway or on the back porch, if the sun was out, he wanted to be out there... even if it was 35 degrees!
Zeus_60209c Warm enough to lounge on the porch, and his humans are home all day... Yup, Zeus is one happy camper! #dogstagram #instadog #seniordog #happydog #BestDogEver

He wasn't such a big fan of rain (ever see a 130-pound dog stand outside and cry because it was sprinkling?), but sure did love romping in the snow.  Before his arthritis slowed him down, he loved to jump and catch snow balls... and jump at the birds flying by.  He also loved to watch for the hot air balloons overhead and would jump and carry on whenever he spotted one.  It all started one day when he was outside, jumping up and down, barking at the sky.  I had no idea why, until I looked up and there they were... 2 hot air balloons.  He spotted them all on his own and was so proud.  After that day, if you said "Zeus, where's the balloon?," he would immediately start looking up at the sky, getting very excited.  I've always wondered if the people in the balloons could see my crazy boy trying so hard to get their attention.

Zeus loved his siblings, and was always such a good big brother to them, as well as the foster babies who passed through our home.  He helped Sophie thru her extreme shyness when she first arrived and she's always looked up to him as her protector.  For awhile, she'd only want to go outside to do her business if he was with her, and he always accompanied her to the vet.

Tut and Zeus were great brothers.  They loved each other, though Tut would sometimes get on Zeus' nerves.  Sometimes little brothers don't understand when you just want to lounge and not run around chasing balls.

 TutZeus_41011e

Zeus and Lola, who'd been together the longest, had a truly special bond.  I know his heart was shattered when we lost her, just as mine was.  I know he missed her deeply, and I can take some comfort in knowing that my babies are together again.

Zeus had this amazing will to live.  He surprised our vet so much by not only getting thru Vestibular Disease and aspiration pneumonia last August, but another 2 bouts with aspiration pneumonia after that.  After we got thru it, she made sure to let us know how remarkable his recovery was and that she honestly didn't think he'd make it.  She attributed it much to our nursing care and the love we had for Zeus, although I think the love he had for us was just as big, if not bigger, a part.  Our vet, who nicknamed him the "Happy Old Man" a couple years ago, had revised that to be "Stubborn Old Man" when she realized he wasn't giving up on life so easily.  He taught us all so very much about having a great attitude in life...

Zeus_61709I am going to miss Zeus' kisses so very much, and that big nose of his.  He always had a way about knowing when you needed a nose nudge and kiss.

I'm going to miss snuggling with him, having him get up on the couch and plop his big 'ole head in my lap.

I'm going to miss giving him a hug -- there is nothing quite like having such a big, solid dog to hug tight.

IMG_20150123_144355_626
I'm going to miss asking him if he wanted to go for a R-I-D-E and seeing the pure joy on his face on those days when he got to be my co-pilot.

I'm going to miss him constantly asking me to open up the back door so he could go lounge on the porch... and I'm going to miss going out there to just sit and watch him enjoying life.

Zeus_71007_GOOD
I'm going to miss his bark, which he seemed to have lost after his first bout with aspiration pneumonia.  It got so faint and light.  But, when his Grammy and Grampy came to visit on Sunday, he surprised us with some big Zeus barks.

I'm going to miss how happy he got when you said "Grammy and Grampy."

#TBT Zeus trying to get the birds to play with him... #throwbackthursday #dogstagram #birdfeeder #happydog #ilovemydogs #cancersucks #megaesophagus #bigdog
I'm going to miss that smile.

I'm going to miss that tail, which we always said was a lethal weapon, and those welts it left on my legs from happily wagging so hard.

I'm going to miss those big, big beautiful eyes looking at me... filled with so much love and devotion.

I will never, ever understand why my boy had to endure this cancer at the end of his life.  Why he was cursed with the pain and sickness, as opposed to just having "old age" issues.  Why he had to be so sick for his last days.  It's not fair.  Cancer sucks and it has surely turned our world upside down this year.

Rest in Peace, my sweet baby boy.  We love and miss you
more than words can say.  Run free with your sister,
and please keep a watch over us.

Pure love 💜 He always steals my #Brookstone #nap pillow and blanket and I don't care. #mybaby #dogstagram #ilovemyseniordog #seniordog

Goodbye, Sweet Baby Girl.

It is with an extremely broken heart, and many tears, that I am writing this post.  We made the heart wrenching decision to end Lola's pain and said goodbye to the sweetest girl in the world last night.

Lola ~ Forever our Baby Girl
2002 ~ 2015

Lola is, was, one in a million.  Sure, I'm the crazy dog lady and I love all dogs, but truly... she was very, very special and everyone she came into contact with thought so as well (especially our vet).  Lola had a personality like no other, and a heart of gold.  She loved everyone and everything. She made friends everywhere she went, instantly becoming the center of attention. Lola was so full of love and wanted nothing more than to be with and please her humans.

She loved her siblings as much as they loved her.  I know their hearts are breaking as well, and I can only hope we can comfort them the way they comfort us.

She loved romping in the snow, and her last storm was almost as special as she was.  It breaks my heart that she was not able to run and play in the 30" or so that we received, but she did enjoy a little stroll with her Daddy.

I'm going to miss her snuggles and kisses immensely - she knew how to comfort and make any bad situation better.  At night, when I would stretch out on the couch to watch TV, she would climb up and lie down behind me - spooning, so to speak.  She hadn't been able to do that these past few difficult weeks and I can't even begin to tell you how much I missed those bonding Mommy & me moments.

NicLola_11715f

Coming home is never going to be the same. Lola won't be there to greet me at the top of the stairs, toy in mouth.  She'd done that since she was a youngster and it always made us laugh... no matter which of her humans was coming home, she'd go and grab a favorite toy and meet us at the top of the stairs (or sometimes down by the door if she was extra antsy to kiss us).  If we brought home any shopping bags, she'd set her toy down so she could inspect the bags... I'd like to think she was making sure there was nothing entering the house that could harm her humans, but I know she was really just looking to grab herself a yogurt or banana.

Lola_11715b

I will never understand why the sweetest girl in the world had to endure such a horrific, aggressive cancer.  Life is not fair.  Cancer sucks.  The holes in our hearts are immense.

Rest in Peace, sweet baby girl.  We love you and miss you greatly.

On a sad note, they lost their beloved Norbert to cancer last week. Kate and I have been chatting quite a bit over the past few months about our big guy's issues, and even more so in the past week in regard to the dreaded cancer diagnosis we both received.  We've been leaning on each other for days, and despite her own broken heart and loss, she is still checking in on Lola on a regular basis.  Friends like this are wonderful... I only wished we lived a little closer, especially during such difficult times.

Please wag on over and show Norbert's family some love....

A Gentle Giant

Happy Wordless Wednesday!  Life has been keeping me super-crazy-insane-busy and as a result, I was a little behind in blogland.  Last night when I sat down to catch up on reading, I quickly found myself wiping away tears as I read of a dear 4-legged friend's passing over the Rainbow Bridge.  The Lapdogs and I never met Thor in person, but everyone in blogland loved him as if he were an old friend.
We'll miss you big guy... a true gentle giant.

Never Say Goodbye...

Happy Wordless Wednesday!  Bon Jovi rocked The Garden so hard last night that they blew out the PA.  Cell phone pics are all I have for now...

Just a few words this Wordless Wednesday... give your furbabies an extra squeeze today In Memory of Virginia, an 8 year old Airedale Terrier who, after a hard live (she was abused, a breeding dog and afraid of men), traveled 800 miles (in 100 mile legs) to her forever home this past weekend.  Sadly, she got out of her new owner's yard yesterday.  An intensive search was started and hope was up when she was sighted at 9:00 pm last night. Unfortunately, she was hit and killed on that same road very early this morning... and the driver never even bothered to stop. RIP Sweet Baby Girl..... ♥

Me, watching Dora & Diego play ~ October, 2010
Although today is Dogs on Thursday, the Lapdogs really wanted to share a link for donations to Tiger World with everyone.  They too are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Dora and Diego and hope that you might consider making a tax-deductible donation in their memory.  Even just $5 or $10 would be a huge help to them at this difficult time.

RIP Dora and Diego

Today's Wordless Wednesday is a tribute to Dora and Diego (scroll back to those links if you missed them), two very special jaguars who truly stole a lot of hearts in their short time here.  They may be gone, but they will never be forgotten.  This is one of my most favorite photos of them.
