REVIEW: Vickie Howell's Pop Goes Crochet

Vickie Howell's Pop Goes Crochet: 36 Projects Inspired By Icons of Popular Culture
by Vickie Howell
Paperback: 144 pages
Publisher: Lark Books (May 5, 2009)

PopGoesCrochet

Vickie Howell is back with a brand new book of funky, original and inspiring patterns... and this time its all about crochet! Vickie Howell’s Pop Goes Crochet pays tribute to popular-culture (past and present) with 36 projects inspired by celebrities in music, film, television and movies.

As with Vickie's books in the past, I find some of the designs a little too funky for my personal style, but all in all, there is a broad range of patterns offered. You'll find patterns for men, women and children... and they include just about everything: hats, bags, sweaters, scarves, socks, vests, skirts, wristlets - even wire jewelry!

Pop Goes Crochet is a great book for young crocheters and seems to be hitting the market at the right time, as crochet is picking up popularity. The photography throughout is bright and modern. Charts of abbreviations, yarn weights and hook equivalents are included, however the book is missing a basic crochet instruction guide. I know that nearly every knitting book includes basic instructions and am quite surprised to see this left out of one of Vickie's books. As someone who does not crochet, I find this to be unappealing to others like myself who may be interested in learning how.

About the Author Vickie Howell's projects have been featured in many newspapers, books and magazines. She also has appeared on numerous TV shows, including The Today Show. Vickie is host of DIY's Knitty Gritty and writes a regular celebrity column for Vogue Knitting's Knit. 1 magazine. Her previous books include New Knits on the Block, Not Another Teen Knitting Book and Knit Aid. A self-proclaimed crafty gRRRL, Vickie Howell has been involved in the creative arts for as long as she can remember.

Growing up, Doris Day’s wholesome movies were a mainstay in my house. Her films characterized a kinder time when high jinks happened but a happy ending was guaranteed. This silky beaded scarf personifies her smooth voice, sparkling eyes, and playful style.

Dreaming of Beagle Bagels

Its finally Friday - woo hoo! I'd like to thank my guest posters pooches for helping Mommy blog this week... good job boys! While they were doing that, Lola tried to stick her nose in help Mommy take some pictures. Look - one sock down, one to go!

TrekkingCharlotteSock1b

Those are my "trekking to Charlotte" socks that I started last May. I swear socks-in-progress love to hide from me. As you can see, I already started its mate. Hopefully its done before next May!

I haven't worked on this in over a week now, but here is the start to the Chevron blanket for Emma. I thought I might have this done for her Welcome party tomorrow, but boy was I delusional now I'm thinking its a more appropriate gift for fall...

ChevronBlanket_409

So... I decided this year I would document the baby robins by taking daily pictures... for which I've succeeded in more like every-other-day pictures. Since I first posted them last week, here are some updates of the 3 little buggers...

Saturday ~ May 2nd

I took some cute sleepy shots of them last night but haven't had a chance to download them yet, so those will be in the next animal kingdom update. My how fast they grow... in a week they went from hatching to barely fitting in their nest!

I'll leave you today with some fill-ins... happy weekend!

1. Apples are to oranges as knit is to crochet.
2. I am so done and that's all I have to say about that.
3. I think I hear water running.
4. Wave the checkered flag.
5. Do what you want to do, but leave me the heck out of your drama.
6. Zeus turned around and behind him was a Radio Flyer wagon; in the wagon was a bucket filled with Beagle Bagels .... and then Daddy woke the poor boy up from his dream!
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to sitting down to relax for an hour -- its been one crazy busy week, tomorrow my plans include throwing the Welcome Emma party and Sunday, I want to RELAX!

Camera Loving Pooches

Happy belated Doggy Thursday... the day is nearly over and I'm just now getting a chance to post.

If you only stop by for the 4-legged days, make sure you scroll back to read my guest writers' posts this week. Zeus posted some lovely photos of himself on Monday and Teutul posted all about his weekend fun on Tuesday.

Now for some pictures... it seems like we've had 4 camera loving pups this week!

Lola {click on linked names for more pics - I love that look there} has been hamming it up for the camera this week...

Sophie {another great look/expression on her face in that pic} got a little too close to the camera while checking out the football, which had been hiding in the bottom of one of their toy baskets and was re-discovered when we cleaned out the toys last week.

Zeus is always great with the camera... whether its posed or action shots!

Teutul had his fun at the race track on Saturday and it looks like he posted all his pictures on Tuesday already! I found these pictures of him wrestling with Lola from a couple weeks ago though...

Mom's Still Busy...

Our mom is still screaming running around like crazy... something about being real busy at work, throwing the Welcome Emma party on Saturday and being really behind. She and Daddy took me to see the doctor lady last night. It wasn't our doctor lady (she's off for a few days), but it was another pretty nice lady. Apparently my allergies are worse then ever before this year. The nice lady gave me some icky antibiotics (why do they have to be so big and un-tasty?) and spray stuff to put on my butt... after she shaved it and made me look silly!

Tut_allergy_50509

Dad has noticed I'd been biting at that spot and had torn out the hair on Sunday morning. Since Mom was worried I'd do it more while they were gone to racing, she made Daddy clear a spot in the car for me (and it wasn't a very big spot either!) and I got to go. Daddy thinks I chewed my butt just so I could go to his race...

When we got there this thing was wandering around in the pits! The nerve!

Chicken_racing_50309

I wanted to get 'em... but Mom held me back, so I only got to give him the evil eye from afar...

Tut_Chicken_50309

It was great to be back at the track! After Mommy kept booting me out of her lap (I think I was a little nervous since I hadn't been in so long and I just wanted to sit with her... but she wanted to knit) I stole her chair decided to sit by myself in my favorite chair...

Matt_Tut_50309 Tut_50309

Little Miss Madison hung out with me a bunch...

MadiTut_50309b MadiTut_lazy_50309

But then she started making me look really silly... trying to give me "hair" and even deciding to do a photo shoot with me wearing her hat! Silly, silly child!!!

MadiTut_hair_50309 MadiTut_pics_50309b

But its all okay... after she made me wear her stinky hat, I give her a big, sloppy kiss!

MadiTut_pics_50309_hat MadiTut_KISS_50309

This is Madi's brother Andrew (he races too) helping Daddy pump out his gas.

MattAndrew_50309

Daddy won something they called "the pole" ... I think that meant he got to start the race first. He didn't win, but he led some laps and finished second in the race! Yeah Daddy (can you see my excitement??!!)!

BSH_50309c Tut_50309c

It was a fun day spent with a bunch of my friends ... and I forgot all about itching my butt! Here I am with Mommy and with my bud Stratton...

NicTut_50309b TutStratton_50309b

Mommy and Daddy laughed at me all the way home.... but I was pooped! What a day!

My Mom's a Little Busy...

My Mom mumbled something about being crazy busy (I'm not sure what exactly that means) as she was running out of the house, tossing us treats, this morning. I think she was rushing off for some stupid work meeting... right after I heard her making a doctor appointment for Tut tonight. I was a little jealous at first, but then heard her say it wasn't with our doctor lady (apparently she gets to take some days off from work), whom I just luvs to visit. Tut doesn't know yet, but now he has to see some other doctor person (ppffttt)... I tried to tell him to stop biting at his itches, but he didn't listen and now he's got a big icky bald spot on his butt... stupid kid! Mom will be back to blogging later, but for now you get some nice pictures of muah...

Zeus_closeup_43009b Zeus_43009c

I had fun zipping around the yard, but Mom wasn't too pleased when I rolled around in the dirt. She called me a dirty dog!

Hatching Eggs

Spring has officially arrived! How do I know? Just lookie here...

Robins2009_43009

I checked on the robin's nest under the porch last night, hoping to find four pretty blue eggs... instead I found hatching eggs! This morning when I checked, all four had hatched...

Robins2009_50109

It was kinda like Lapdog's Wild Animal Kingdom when I got home last night. Mr Bunny was out too....

Bunny_43009

Can you see him there under the tree? Maybe its a Mrs. Bunny.... I wonder if we have baby bunnies somewhere back there? hhmmm...

I'll leave you with a little Friday Fill-Ins...

1. The first rule of working in an office and getting along is learning how to laugh and put up with a lot of BS.

2. I'm a Gloucester girl, of course I love clams.

3. When I think of carnivals I think of candy apples & cotton candy.

4. Tulips are probably my favorite spring flower, but I adore Gerber Daisies most of all.

5. Things on my desk include computer, calendar, framed pictures, stapler, stress ball, paper clips, hand lotion, pens, scissors, files, lots of paper, post-its, candle, coffee mug, plant, white-out, phone....

6. The swine flu outbreak makes me wanna scream.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to the Bruins game (Round 2, Game 1!), tomorrow my plans include working on favors for Emma's party and Sunday, I want to enjoy a day at the race track with friends and maybe even see my honey win his first race of 2009!
