Merrick Hero's Banquet and K9s For Warriors + GIVEAWAY

Finding the right food for your dog can be difficult. Not only do they need to enjoy the taste, the nutrition needs to be the right fit, and you need to feel good about what you're feeding to your four-legged baby.

Any pet parents who has spent countless hours reading labels will tell you that when you find a brand and recipe that meets all those requirements, life is good.

Merrick Grain Free is Perfect for Your #BestDogEver + GIVEAWAY

Not every dog is created equal, and neither is every dog food.

Just like people, not all dogs have the same needs when it comes to proteins, calories and fat, and many have food sensitives or allergies. Fortunately, there are lots of options available, however sorting through all of the labels and nutrition information is time consuming, and often quite confusing.

Finding the perfect food for our dogs is a daunting task, but once you find the Best Food Ever for your dog, you'll quickly realize it was all worth it!

Is Your #BestDogEver Ready for BBQ Season? #Merrick

Do your dogs get as happy to see the nice man in the big brown truck as the Lapdogs do?
Do they, like the Lapdogs, think he's there just to bring them something?

Sure, the Lapdogs are pretty spot-on in knowing that the delivery is usually for them... but no, they're not spoiled. They're just the hard-working kids of a dog blogger. :::wink wink:::

A few weeks ago, their tails were wagging like crazy when a couple of really big boxes arrived and we realized, the Summer Seasonal Recipes were here!

Seasonal Recipes Fit for Every #BestDogEver #Merrick

Disclosure: Merrick sent 3 cases of their Spring Seasonal Recipes to Lapdog Creations in exchange for our honest review. I was not compensated for this review and all opinions expressed are my own.

It's that time of year... the Merrick Spring Seasonal Recipes are here!

Okay, we confess.

They actually arrived a few weeks ago, but one of us (the one with the ability to type) has been a little busy.

Fortunately, that meant the ones without the ability to type have had amble time to taste-test the product, and there have been zero complaints.  Besides, that just means you get another adorable dose of St Paddy's day hat and bunny ear wearing pooches...

Merrick Holiday Recipes + #MerrickBestDayEver

Disclosure: Merrick sent three cases of their Fall & Winter Seasonal Recipes to Lapdog Creations, free of charge for review purposes. I was not compensated for this review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Have you heard?  The Merrick Seasonal Recipes are here and they are a must for every #BestDogEver - as is the Best Game of Fetch Ever, but more about that later.

2015-10-12_09-18-42

The Merrick Seasonal Recipes actually arrived on our doorstep well over a month ago, so we must apologize for our delay.  But, that means we've had plenty of time to really put the recipes to the taste test and they have all passed with flying leaves colors!

The Lapdogs love when the nice man in the brown truck shows up with boxes from our friends over at Merrick.  After all, they know they're about to be spoiled.  Tut and Sophie tried to keep the secret from little sister Penny, but she's way too smart to be fooled by their hound-brains.

Merrick Seasonals are always a big hit at our house.  Heck, we've even been known to hoard stock up on certain favorite flavors. Don't judge, you never know for sure which ones Merrick will - or gasp, won't - bring back! This year's fall/winter offerings include two popular comebacks, as well as two brand new recipes.

  • Gameday Tailgate - a fan favorite coming back!
    • The Lapdogs enjoyed this one on Patriots game day last season, and are wagging their tails for it again this year.  So much yumminess crammed into one can, it truly sounds like a gameday casserole that any human would love as well -  Chicken Thighs, Beef, Carrots, Peas, Bacon and Potatoes in a delicious gravy.
  • Hero’s Banquetbrand new recipe!
  • 2015-10-15_06-34-00
    • This one has quickly become a favorite of the Lapdogs and their humans.  The kids love it for the tasty combination of Turkey, Chicken, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots and Pears, and the humans love that it is a recipe that truly gives back!  That's right... For every can of Hero’s Banquet sold Merrick will make a donation to K9s For Warriors to support their mission of pairing specially trained rescue dogs with veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disability (PTSD).  How awesome is that?!?!
    • Holly Jolly Pot Roast - brand new recipe!
      • The second new addition to the fall/winter seasonal lineup was named by a Merrick Facebook fan as part of a 2015 social media contest. And as the name would imply, this one features Beef, Potatoes and Carrots in Beef Gravy.  Comfort food in a can!
      • Forever Home Holiday Recipe - back for a second season!
        • Another one that makes the humans smile a little bigger, Forever Home Holiday benefits homeless dogs, a cause near and dear to our hearts. For every can of Forever Home purchased during this holiday season, a meal will be donated to a local shelter. And, it's made with Beef, Chicken, Yukon Gold Potatoes, Red Delicious Apples and Peas - sure to please your pup!

Best of all, all four recipes are Grain Free, Made in the USA, and outstanding quality!

The fall/winter seasonal recipes can be found at local pet food retailers who carry Merrick products, as well as at several online retailers, including Chewy.com.  Pick some up for your pooch today.

I'm absolutely certain that he is correct.  Just look at that face.

Now, let's talk about the Best Game of Fetch Ever contest!

Merrick thinks every dog deserves the Best Day Ever, whether it's unending belly rubs or the ultimate game of fetch, and that's why they want to reward the #BestDogEver with the #BestDayEver

      THE DETAILS...
Merrick is inviting pet parents across the country to share why their dog is the Best Dog Ever for a chance to win the Best Game of Fetch Ever with Drew Brees.

      HOW TO ENTER...
Submit a photo and brief narrative through Merrick's Facebook page before December 3

While the Lapdogs think the Best Game of Fetch Ever should be with the one-and-only Mr. Tom Brady, we won't hold it against them.  After all, Mr. Brees seems like a pretty cool dude too.

REVIEW: Merrick Puppy Plate & Power Bites

Disclosure: Merrick sent some Puppy Plate and Power Bites to Lapdog Creations, free of charge for review purposes. I was not compensated for this review and all opinions expressed are my own.

      2015-08-10_04-55-42

Our friends over at Merrick sure know how to make a pup feel welcome.  Last month, Penny received a special little box of goodies, specifically for her to review.

Merrick's canned food is a staple in the Lapdog household. We've been using it as a dinner topper for all of our dogs for years (and, as my long time readers may know, we switched Zeus over almost exclusively to Senior Medley after his megaesophagus got worse and cancer progressed).  While everyone recently got to review the summer recipes, Puppy Plate was just for Penny.  If I didn't know better, I think she really knew this stuff was just for her too...

      2015-08-10_04-59-00

Designed to smoothly transition pup's from their Mama's milk to real food, Puppy Plate is a home-style, chunky recipe. The first five ingredients read like a comfy winter stew: deboned turkey, chicken broth, chicken, duck, peas. The grain-free recipe is Made in the USA, free from artificial colors, flavors and preservatives.

Puppy Plate was Penny's very first taste of wet food... and boy does she love it! Although my little food disposal gobbles up her plain kibble in the morning with no complaints, it's easy to see that she thinks dinner time is the best time.

      2015-08-10_05-11-26

In addition to the puppy food, Merrick also sent two bags of Power Bites. These tiny little star-shapes make perfect training treats! Grain-free and gluten-free, Power Bites are protein-packed, soft, chewy little morsels that are big on flavor.  Sure, we use them for Penny's training sessions, but that doesn't mean her senior brother and sister aren't lined up waiting for their treats as well.

Power Bites are available in five protein sources to satisfy any pup's palate: Texas Beef, Chicken, Pork, Turducken and Salmon. While the Lapdogs love the taste, Mama loves that they are Made in the USA, and the protein source in the #1 ingredient in each recipe.

      2015-08-10_04-56-30

Penny (and yes, Tut and Sophie too) had already had the pleasure of trying the Pork and Beef recipes, thanks to her PupBox and our friends at Chewy.  I'm not sure if the Merrick folks were paying extra close attention to our blog or not, but I thought it was fabulous that they sent bags of the Chicken and Salmon recipes.  This allowed Penny to sample almost all of the flavors, and I have to admit, there isn't one that she does not sit, stay, lie down and roll over for!

As a dog Mom who's always extra careful about what I feed to my babies, I love having these fabulous puppy food and training treat options from Merrick.  I have confidence in knowing Puppy Plate is not going to upset Penny's young stomach and that tossing a handful of Power Bites into my pocket is not going to leave any greasy residue on my clothes.

Stay tuned to the blog this week... Penny got to sample some great #puppyfood and training #dogtreats from our friends at @merrickpetcare SPOILER ALERT: she loved it all! #puppygram #instapuppy #rescuedpuppiesofinstagram #puppylove #dobermanpuppy #adoptd

Due to a few comments I received on our summer recipes review nearly two weeks ago, I wanted to address Merrick's recent announcement of their agreement to sell the company to Nestle Purina PetCare Company. I realize it came as a shock to many, myself included, however I have no reason at this time to believe that Merrick will be nothing less than what it has been for all these years that I have fed their food and treats to my dogs.
"Merrick is one of the fastest-growing natural and organic pet food companies in the industry, and will continue to operate as an independent business with no planned changes to its management or operations." - Merrick Pet Care press release 7/21/15
I understand that there are absolutely no plans in place to change Merrick's recipes or where the products are manufactured.  Of course, I will be keeping a close eye on the food I feed to my dogs, but as of right now, I don't see any reasons not to continue to support and feed Merrick.

      REVIEW: Merrick Summer Seasonal Recipes

Disclosure: Merrick sent cans of the Merrick Summer Seasonals to Lapdog Creations, free of charge for review purposes. I was not compensated for this review and all opinions expressed are my own.

      Merrick Summer Seasonal Recipes
      Where to Find: Merrick

      2015-07-29_04-54-06

Merrick is well known for their seasonal recipes, some of which have become much sought after favorites and are often scooped up in bulk once they hit store shelves. In fact, the Lapdogs stocked up on some of this season's past holiday favorites almost the same way as their humans hoard stock up on Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale to get them through the winter.  (don't judge

      2015-07-29_04-55-11

Merrick really knows how to make sure our furbabies are included when it comes time to plan holiday meals.  Just as we humans wait all year long for those favorite dishes made only for "special occasions," thanks to Merrick, now our furkids do as well.  Perhaps your pup longs for fall's Game Day Tailgate?  Maybe his favorite thing about Christmas is the Festive Holiday Stew?  Does she sit pretty in her Easter bonnet knowing that her reward will be a tasty Easter Brunch?  Or, maybe there's extra kisses involved when you get out the can of Love Potion #9?

      2015-07-29_05-00-39

When it came time to release their summer offerings this year, Merrick certainly did not disappoint.  You'll find not one, not two... but four delicious recipes on store shelves - including two brand new recipes!
        2015-07-29_04-53-142015-07-29_04-51-40
      • Surf N’ Turf USA - new flavor!
        • Now our dogs can enjoy the same great summer staple that we do - surf 'n turf! This recipe includes deboned beef, deboned salmon, shrimp, potatoes, and green beans in a yummy gravy.
      • Summer Lovin’ Stew - new flavor!
        • I'd call this one "summer on a plate."  Includes deboned chicken, blueberries, potatoes, and red apples.
      • Hot Off The Grill - back for a second summer!
        • I love the name of this one, which came from a Petco store associate. This ones sounds like the perfect summer dinner to me... deboned chicken, bacon, cheddar cheese, potatoes, and peas in gravy.
      • Star Spangled Supper - back for a second summer!
        • This one was involved in another "name that recipe" contest, with the winner coming from a Merrick Facebook fan.  Deboned beef is the star, along side bacon, sweet potatoes, and Yukon Gold potatoes.

All four of the Summer Seasonal Recipes are grain free, and feature a balance of high-quality meat, poultry, fruits and vegetables.  Not only are they a great choice for all breeds and all life stages, but because of the limited ingredients, they are also a good choice for dogs with food allergies or sensitivities. And, of course, all of Merrick's canned recipes are Made in the USA.

      2015-07-29_04-56-39

The Lapdogs, who get just a small amount of wet food mixed in with their dinner, are thoroughly enjoying all four of the summer offerings. And, I love that I get to mix things up a little for them with some quality, nutritious options.

Grab the Summer Seasonal Recipes while you can... and don't be afraid to stock up on your dog's favorite.  After all, who doesn't love a good grilled stew in the middle of winter?

REVIEW: Merrick Forever Home Holiday Recipe

      Merrick Forever Home Holiday Recipe

      Where to Find: Chewy.com

      2014-12-16_04-55-42

While a couple of health issues within our pack may have put us a little behind with posting reviews lately, it does not mean that the pack has not been enjoying the latest yum-yum sent to us from our dear friends at Chewy.com

We received some cans of Merrick Forever Home Holiday Classic, and boy were the Lapdogs happy to indulge in the tastes of the season!
Founded in 1988, Amarillo, Texas –based Merrick Pet Care Inc. is a leader in the natural and organic pet food category. With a mission to create the most nutritious and wholesome food, Merrick helps families take better care of their pets by cooking up nutritious, real whole foods for pets. All foods are made in the USA using only the freshest ingredients grown by local farmers. The company offers a wide variety of dry and wet foods as well as treats.
As one of three seasonal offerings from Merrick this year (including Homecoming Holiday Recipe and Venison Holiday Stew), Forever Home Holiday Classic is a grain-free recipe made with beef, chicken, Yukon gold potatoes, red delicious apples and peas.  With ingredients like those, what dog wouldn't drool as soon as you pop the lid?  The Lapdogs sure did!

Forever Home Holiday Classic is made in the USA, great for all life stages, and contains no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives - all very important to this over-protective doggy Mama.
2014-12-16_04-54-57As many of your know, we've been big fans of Merrick for a long time, and recently switched Zeus over to their Senior Medley canned recipe as his main food source.  I'm happy to say he's been doing wonderful on it and we have seen a tremendous improvement in managing his mega-esophagus.  It's expensive as all heck to feed a nearly-100 pound dog a diet of 95% canned food, and I might be eating more pb&j sandwiches these days, but he is well worth it.  Santa sure did help us out a little bit this past month however, as Zeus received gifts off of his "Chewy Registry" from a dear friend, his SC grandparents, and the awesome folks at Chewy themselves, whom we owe a huge THANK YOU to!  I've always said they are amazing to work with and have unbelievable customer service, but Chewy's above-and-beyond personal touch and caring about us truly means the world!  From the bottom of my heart, thank you.... it's an honor to be a part of your blogging family.

And... on that note, remember that 1-2 day shipping is always free for orders of $49 or more at Chewy.com.  Our last order actually arrived the very next day - wow!  They also offer a convenient auto-ship for items you use on a regular basis (and it's super easy to change the frequency, quantity, etc. once you set it up -- unlike some other sites).  We're now using it for Zeus' Senior Medley!

      REVIEW: Merrick Big Brush Bones

      Merrick Big Brush Bones

      Where To Find: Chewy.com

      2014-07-10_01-55-07

If you're a regular reader of this blog, you already know how much the Lapdogs love it when a Chewy box shows up on our doorstep.  You probably also know that their Mama loves the great folks over at Chewy and at Merrick, so imagine all of the excitement when we got the chance to review Merrick Big Brush Bones!

      2014-07-10_01-57-10

I'm always looking for ways to, ah-hum, improve the Lapdogs' breath and keep their aging smiles gleaming bright.  When I heard about Merrick's line of grain-free dental treats, I knew we had to try them!

2014-07-10_01-58-22Made in the USA with all-natural ingredients, Big Brush Bones are intended for dogs weighing 25 pounds or more (we've got that covered, easily).  The green bone-shaped treats are grain-free and gluten-free.  The ingredients (Potato Starch, Vegetable Glycerin, Dried Plain Beet Pulp, Cane Molasses, Chicken Fat, Natural Chicken Flavor, Water, Alfalfa Nutrient Concentrate [source of chlorophyll], Lecithin, Dried Cultured Skim Milk, Parsley) support fresh breath, while the shape and texture have been designed to combat plaque and tartar.

And, as far as I can tell, the Lapdogs certainly support Merrick's claim that all dogs love the taste!  After they all patiently waited while their crazy Mama snapped photos for this review, they each happily found a spot on the deck and chomped away for a few minutes.  Big Brush Bones did not disappoint!  I think Zeus' smile says it all...
      2014-07-10_01-59-05

Big Brush Bones not exactly a fit for your tiny pup? No worries, Merrick does not discriminate - there's a dental treat for pooches of all sizes! The line includes Big Brush Bones for dogs 25+ pounds, Lil' Brush Bones for dogs 15-25 pounds, and Mini Brush Bones for dogs 5-15 pounds, as well as Flossies and Texas Toothpicks chews, each for dogs 15+ pounds.  The easily digestible line is intended for all life stages as well.

The Lapdogs love their Big Brush Bones, but shhhh, help me keep the secret.  Don't tell them their actually cleaning their teeth while crunching up their t-r-e-a-t!  We will definitely be adding these to our regular rotation.
      character-snacking
How about you, does your dog need a little help keeping his breath and smile gleaming?  Head on over to Chewy.com and snatch some up.  As always, all Chewy.com orders over $49 receive free 1-2 day shipping, so be sure to stock up on some other delicious Merrick treats as well (the Lapdogs are partial to the Grammy's Pot Pie crunchy treats).

Disclosure: Chewy.com sent a bag of Merrick Big Brush Bones to Lapdog Creations, free of charge for review purposes. I was not compensated for this review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Is Your Dog The #BestDogEver + Merrick Dog Food Giveaway

I hope everyone reading this exclaimed "Yes!" Not to brag or anything (well, maybe just a little), but I don't just have the best dog ever, I have four of them!  It's no wonder we were chosen to be a part of the Merrick #BestDogEver campaign, right?

      Check out our @merrickpetcare #review on the blog tomorrow and enter to win a years worth of #dogfood ! #dogstagram #instadog #dogpaw #Merrick #BestDogEver

All kidding aside, we all know that every dog is the Best Dog Ever and they all deserve the best toys, treats, beds, and, of course, food.  The folks over at Merrick couldn't agree more.
logo"At Merrick, we don't just make pet food.  We make the Best Food Ever.  For the Best Pet Ever. Yours."

I'm sure most of you have heard of, and many of you have tried, Merrick pet foods, but I bet you didn't know just how many high quality products they produce.  Fact is, Merrick has 125 dog food, cat food, and pet treat recipes!  (Did you all just say WOW with me?)  And, each one is specifically formulated to provide your pet with the best, most nutritious food they can get.

MER-3D-Bag-GF-Real-Buffalo-Sweet-PotatoAs part of the campaign, I got to choose some of Merrick's dog food for the Lapdogs to try.  I decided to focus on just one of my best dogs for this review and picked the Grain Free Real Buffalo & Sweet Potato recipe for Zeus.  Deboned buffalo is the first ingredient, helping to build and maintain lean, healthy muscle tissue.  Fresh produce such as sweet potatoes, peas, apples and blueberries are added to offer the benefit of sustained energy without upsetting grain-sensitive stomachs.

Zeus is a huge fan of the Buffalo & Sweet Potato recipe, as am I!  My big guy has mega esophagus, so in addition to getting the best nutrition possible for him, I also have to be very aware of the size of the kibble.  Merrick's all life stages kibble is a great size for him.

MER-3D-Can-Classic-Senior-MedleyZeus was one lucky boy and also got to try Merrick's Senior Medley canned food.  While he loves his Buffalo & Sweet Potato kibble, he loves this canned food!  We have always mixed in some high-quality canned food with all of our dogs' kibble, but have recently begun cutting back on the amount of kibble and adding more canned to Zeus' diet (we're now at a rough 50/50 mix).  Sure, all dogs love canned food... but this Senior Medley is like doggy crack!  Zeus can't get enough and his brother and sisters have been begging for him to share.  I guess it's the delish mixture of chicken, turkey, peas, carrots, potatoes and apples that's got them drooling!

IMG_20140527_162725_883-1As a dog Mom who's always looking for the best nutrition for my fur-kids, Merrick is a true stand out!  Not only is it grain free and natural, this high protein dog food is Made in the USA -- the most important thing to me when deciding whether or not to feed something to my babies!  I love that Merrick uses locally sourced and farm fresh ingredients.  Not only does it ensure the highest quality, it also helps support the local farmers.

It's no secret that dogs thrive when fed quality protein and healthy fats - both of which are found in Merrick's natural recipes.  Now, how would you like to win a year's supply of dog food ($600 value)?!?!  Giveaway is open to US residents aged 18 and over.  Just follow the steps in the Rafflecopter below to enter.

REVIEW: Merrick Grain Free Real Texas Beef

Merrick Grain Free Real Texas Beef

Where to Find: Merrick Pet Care

      Merrick Grain Free dog food

When our friends over at Merrick asked if we wanted to try their Real Texas Beef recipe, we barked out loud!  Of course we'd love to try the new recipe!

We were sent samples of the Real Texas Beef & Sweet Potato dry kibble, as well as the 96% Real Texas Beef wet food.  I think the Lapdogs felt each was equally tasty, although as with most dogs, they drooled a bit more for the wet food!  Both are grain free and suitable for all life stages, which makes feeding in multi-dog households a lot easier these days!

Grain Free Real Texas Beef & Sweet Potato is made with real, whole foods sourced from local farmers and provides balance nutrition for all life stages of dogs.  Deboned real Texas beef is the first ingredient and helps comprise the 70% of meat sourced ingredients in this kibble.  The 30% of fresh produce added includes potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas, apples and blueberries.  The grain free formula helps to build and maintain lean, healthy muscle tissue, as well as to support healthy skin, coat, and joints.  The easily digestible formula sustains energy and yields 38% protein in each bowl.
"Like with all of our recipes, we locally source our farm fresh ingredients to ensure the highest quality. As a result, Merrick recipes don’t contain any ingredients from China and our made in our own five-star kitchen and manufacturing facilities that uphold the strict guidelines well defined by the FDA." - Merrick Pet Care
96% Real Texas Beef wet food is grain free and contains no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or by-products.  As the name suggests, each can contains 96% meat with vitamins and minerals added to meet your dog's complete nutrition needs.  In addition to the USDA-inspected deboned beef, these additives are DHA for healthy growth, Omega 6 and 3 fatty acids to help support a beautiful coat, and glucosamine and chrondroitin for joint health.

Verdict?  The Lapdogs love the taste and smell, the humans love the grain free formulas made with high quality, farm sourced ingredients.  That's a win-win in our book!  Hop on board the Merrick Food Revolution today!

Disclosure: Merrick Pet Care sent samples of their Grain Free Real Texas Beef recipe (canned and kibble) to Lapdog Creations, free of charge for review purposes. I was not compensated for this review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Check out our Love Potion #9 #review on Friday! www.LapdogCreations.com #merrick #dogfoodNo longer just a fun song, Love Potion #9 is an all new, grain-free recipe designed for all life stages and breeds.  Made with real, wholesome beef, sweet potatoes, zucchini and tomatoes, the Lapdogs say it's just as tasty as the name would imply!

The only drawback?  Love Potion #9 is part of Merrick's seasonal canned food collection, which means it's - sadly - only available for a limited time.  Although the Lapdogs received two cans to enjoy, they've made it clear that Mama had better go find some more at the store before it flies off the shelves.
