REVIEW: Namaste Bags part 2

Namaste Bags
Where To Find:
Namaste Inc.

Namaste_ohsnapPouch

Namaste has released some wonderfully chic and functional new products this fall, including Oh Snap! and Mini Cozy. Having become a fan of Namaste products earlier this year (Namaste review, July 2008), I was very excited to review these new items.

Oh Snap! is a set of three mesh pouches, complete with Namaste snaps, to blissfully organize all of your crafty notions and bring the Zen back to your life. Oh Snap! pouches come in just one color, charcoal gray (which coordinates nicely with all of the Cali Collection bag colors), and three sizes: baby is 6.5" x 1" x 4", momma is 9" x 1.25" x 7" and granddaddy is a whopping 10" x 2" x 8" (big enough to handle a small project). The pouches are wonderful and the mesh makes it a snap to see what is in each bag and quickly find what you need. Knitting is supposed to be fun, so make your organization effortless and a no-brainer snap with Oh Snap!

Mini Cozy is a smaller version of the original Cozy - and in my opinion, a tun more useful! It is the perfect size for DPNs and/or crochet hooks and can easily be used to take them with you on the go, tossing in your knitting bag, or as storage at home. As with the original Cozy, it reminds me a bit of a ladies' cigarette case from the 1950's... sophisticated, yet functional. Mini Cozy comes in most of the Cali Collection colors; Charcoal, Hollywood Pink, Lime, Olive, Peacock, Saddle and Turquoise and measures 2 3/4" x 8.5" x 1/4".

newportINuse

Not new to the Namaste fall/winter collection, but new to my collection is the Newport bag. I have been carrying the Newport in Saddle as my everyday bag this past fall and absolutely adore it. I also waited this long to review it so that I could have a very tried-and-true review for you.

I can't even beging to say enough about the functionality and design of this bag. My other half even commented on how cool looking Newport was, and I'm sure most of you will agree, to have your guy comment on your bag sure speaks volumes about it! Newport is a perfect size for my everyday use, especially back and forth to the office. There is a full length zippered pouch in the middle of Newport which basically seperates the bag into two large compartments. On one side I have a small handbag which houses my wallet, keys and essentials and can be easily removed to run into a store or someplace I don't want (or need) everything else -- and I'm finding this system is just perfect! There are two small side pokcets on that side as well - one fit for a cell phone and the other for easy to grab items (i.e. business cards, a pen, keys, etc). On the other large side I always have a small project bag (right now its my alpaca shaped scarf), my day planner book and any paper items I'm carrying around (Newport easily holds file folders, magazines, etc). As you can see in the picture above, I also tote around several other things... cough drops, gloves, sunglasses, lip balm, tissues, etc. It all fits nicely - and the sleek design and solid structure are perfect for my everyday needs!

Newport comes in six Cali Collection colors; Charcoal, Hollywood Pink, Olive, Peacock, Saddle and Turquoise. There are five metal feet on the flat bottom and strong magnetic closures at the top. Newport measures in at a nice 7" x 11" x 15" with a handle drop length of 10.5".

Whether your looking to spoil yourself or someone on your holiday list this year, Namaste has several wonderful options!

REVIEW: Knit Two

Knit Two
by Kate Jacobs
Hardcover: 336 pages
Publisher: Putnam Adult (November 25, 2008)

KnitTwo

Kate Jacobs is back with the much anticipated sequel to The Friday Night Knitting Club, Knit Two. Kate brings us all back to the coziest knitting shop in Manhattan, Walker and Daughter, to catch up with the characters that many of us have come to know and love.

I will admit that I am still in the midst of reading Friday Night Knitting Club (half way through at the moment), as I tend to spend more of my free time knitting, rather than reading. However, I am hooked and ready to finish so I can move on to Knit Two! I really wanted to review Knit Two now, without having read it yet, as I had the pleasure of meeting Kate on her last book tour and despite my not reading fast, I definitely wanted to give props to this second edition to what I hope will now be a series (Kate, if you're reading this, yes that it is hint). I have known for some time now that there is a death coming in Friday Night Knitting Club, however have been good about letting people not tell me who... well, that was until I flipped the "uncorrected proof" copy of Knit Two over and immediately read the who on the back. Shocked? Yes. I was sure it was someone else. But that certainly won't spoil the rest of the book for me.

Since I can't actually read Knit Two just yet, I will rely on the official press release to give you some more information.

As previously mentioned, Knit Two returns to Walker and Daughter. It is five years later and seven women are struggling to move on to the next phase of their lives after the premature death of....... (the review copy's jacket spoiled it for me, but I won't spoil it for those of you who are still in the midst of the first book). Dakota is now a student at NYU. Peri has thrown herself into her handbag business. Darwin is attempting to balance twin infants and a teaching career...

A series of once-in-a-lifetime circumstances will bring four of our favorite knitting club's members to Italy for the summer, where they will embark on an unforgettable journey of romance, self-discovery and surprises. Each is in search of something different, while the three others remain in New York, offering support from across the ocean.

As knitters, we are not surprised at the popularity of Friday Knight Knitting Club and easily understand how women of all walks of life who would otherwise never come in contact with each other, let alone become friends, can form such an amazing bond. After all, most of us see it in our own knitting groups. Women everywhere have responded to Kate's lively and heartwarming portrayal of a group of smart, witty, down-to-earth women whose friendships transcend their differences, who support one another through good times and bad, and whose challenges real women face in their everyday lives. Its no wonder knitting has grown in popularity and why we all love our knitting groups - whether our weekly guilds who meet at the LYS or book store or our groups who spend hours chatting in forums on Ravelry (with members spanning the entire country, and world sometimes). Knitting groups are amazing.

When Kate was asked what it is about knitting that makes it so popular right now, she responded "Knitting is a lot of things all wrapped up in a ball of yarn. It's memory of good old days and sweet grandmothers. It can be an assertion of personality, of irony, of creativity. It can be a luxurious indulgence using the fanciest materials, and it can be a budget-minded holiday scarf using yarn on sale. You can knit all alone, or you can find a group and knit with them. Knitting has the flexibility to meet our needs for a creative and emotional outlet, and it has a very soothing rhythm. It nurtures, and I think that's a very good thing in times of uncertainty." Well said Kate, well said...

About The Author: Kate Jacobs is a former magazine writer and editor who lives in Los Angeles. She is the author of The Friday Night Knitting Club and Comfort Food. The movie rights to Friday Night Knitting Club have been optioned by Julia Roberts. Kate reports that she is happily working on a new book already and that, good for us, there are a lot of stories she wants to tell!

REVIEW: LL Bean Naughty and Nice Gift Tote for Dogs

LL Bean's Naughty & Nice Gift Tote for Dogs
Where to Find:
LL Bean

LLBeanPlanetDog

Maine based companies LL Bean and Planet Dog have once again joined forces for the holidays, offering the LL Bean Naughty and Nice Tote for Dogs. They have stuffed a mini version of LL Bean's famous red handled canvas tote with three of Planet Dog's best selling holiday items - a green Orbee-Tuff Bulb with Treat Spot, a set of Squeaky Naughty and Nice Lil Buds and a Paw Print euro sticker. LL Bean finished off the special gift pack by embroidering a red paw on the tote and tossing in a bag of all natural Peanut Butter Treats.

LLBeanPlanetDogb

As you might have guessed, the anticipatoin on reviewing the LL Bean Naughty and Nice Tote for Dogs was quite high in our household. Not only was the human reviewer excited to see this collaboration from two amazing New England companies, the four lapdogs were even more excited! They instantly knew that box was for them...

LLBeanPlanetDog_Lola LLBeanPlanetDog_LolaTut

The LL Bean Naughty and Nice Tote for Dogs did not disappoint, but instead received several Paws Up! Our kids have always enjoyed Planet Dog's toys and these holiday themed ones were no exception. The Orbee-Tuff Bulb with Treat Spot (made in the USA!) is rated 3 out of 5 chompers and has Planet Dog's famous minty smell/taste, as well as a cool Treat Spot for stuffing! The Squeaky Naughty and Nice Lil Buds are rated a Chew Level 1, not intended for chewing, but rather cuddling on a cold winter's night - and are machine washable! The all-natural Peanut Butter Treats are a good size cookie that will leave your peanut-butter-loving pooches drooling for more! After the doggies have drooled all over the treats & toys, the humans still have gifts left to enjoy - the sticker and tote! I've found the tote is the perfect size for a small knitting project - take it on the go or use it to secure a working ball of yarn while knitting at home. Its also the perfect size for your wallet, keys, cell phone and a few necessities while out and about.

You simply can't go wrong with giving the LL Bean Naughty and Nice Tote for Dogs this holiday season! At just $29.95, it makes an excellent gift for your doggy friends, pet sitter, groomer, etc. You'll be pleasing both the canine and humans with this gift!

REVIEW: The Prayer Shawl Companion

The Prayer Shawl Companion
by Janet Bristow & Victoria A. Cole-Galo

Paperback: 176 pages
Publisher: Taunton (September 23, 2008)

PrayerShawlCompanion

When I was asked to review The Prayer Shawl Companion, I said sure and figured just another shawl book.... but no, this is not just another book.

Packed with stories, photos and 38 patterns, The Prayer Shawl Companion is a book to add to any knitter's collection. Not all knitting books are meant to be read in the manner that this one is and no matter what religion your practice - or none at all - I think you will enjoy reading these encouraging pages.

Ten years ago, the authors Jean and Victoria began knitting shawls for those in need of comfort. Shawl by shawl, the word spread about this heartwarming gesture and The Prayer Shawl Ministry was born. In the past ten years, over 2,000 groups of knitters have joined in and brought comfort and hope to those suffering - including Iraq war veterans and Hurricane Katrina survivors.

The Prayer Shawl Companion is Jean and Victoria's first book, released to mark the 10th Anniversary of The Prayer Shawl Ministry. They share with us the personal stories, prayers and patterns that members of this popular charity knitting movement have contributed to help grow the cause.

Apart from being knit with love and good vibes for comfort in suffering, prayer shawls can also mark joyous occasions. Among the 38 designs, there is a Baptism Shawl, a Wedding Capelet, a Nursing Shawl and baby wraps.

The patterns are clearly written, each with a description from the designer and great photography. The typical techniques and knitting instructions are included, but what sets this book apart from others is the Color & Symbology section which I find very interesting. In the back you will find a color chat and symbolism of numbers & shapes, as well as religious symbols. For instance, Aqua signifies courage, balance, harmony, stability; a Triangle signifies trinity, woman, creative intellect; the Claddagh sympolizes loyalty, friendship, romantic love.

Whether you're simply looking for some new shawl ideas or if you're looking for some inspirational stories, pick up a copy of The Prayer Shawl Companion for your book stash. Some of my personal favorites are the Calming Shawl, Lacy Linen Stole, Tumbling Block Stole and Wedding Capelet.

Happy Knitting...... Happy Comforting... and Happy Healing!

REVIEW: Paco Collars

Paco Collar
Where to Find:
Paco Collars

PacoCollars_ZeusB

Paco Collars specializes in high quality, custom made leather dog & cat collars, as well as leashes and matching human bracelets & belts. Founder Ana Poe was "adopted" by Paco, a beautiful pit bull who had a hard start to life, and out of that friendship & lasting bond, Paco Collars was born...

PacoCollars_LolaB

Here at Lapdog Creations, we received a gorgeous PBRC in brown for review. As you can see, even though the size is a bit tight for Zeus and loose for Lola, it is quite stunning (side note... we hope that Zeus slims down a touch to wear it proudly, as opposed to Lola beefing up)! Are you wondering just what PBRC stands for? No, its not some weird form of public broadcasting... this particular collar was designed for Pit Bull Rescue Central, which is just one of the wonderful organizations Paco Collars supports. $5 from the sale of every PBRC collar is donated to the organization! Kudos to Paco Collars!

Quality & chic comes with the need of some patience... Paco Collars are custom made for each and every order, so although you might have to wait a little while (typically 6 - 8 weeks from the time an order is placed), it will be well worth it when your pooch is the talk of the dog park! As if being the ultimate in doggy style isn't enough, Paco Collars come with a lifetime of free repair (there are some restrictions... if Fido is a chewer, they can't fix that, but anything resulting from product failure is surely covered).

There are so many cool and unique styles to choose from - from tough guy to urban cowboy to girly girl. I think my favorite is the Uba, which features some bad ass skull & crossbones! For a softer side, I also adore the Sybyl Lilly with its beautiful celtic heart design. I won't forget about the kitties - Paco Collars currently has 3 styles of cat collars to choose from. The humans aren't to be left out either... we can choose a belt or bracelet to match our 4-legged furbaby!

Have a special dog (or cat) mom (or dad) on your holiday list this year? Think about Paco Collars... or better yet, put them on your own wish list! And remember...

Happy dogs love Paco Collars!

REVIEW: Bags The Rock - Knitting on the Road with Kelley Deal

Bags That Rock: Knitting on the Road with Kelley Deal
by Kelley Deal
Paperback: 128 pages
Publisher: Lark Books (October 7, 2008)

BagsThatRock

I will hold no shame in starting right off with proclaiming my love for this book... and its not just because it was released on my birthday! Bags That Rock: Knitting on the Road with Kelley Deal is fun, modern, innovative and classy all rolled in to one!

With 20 projects in all, there's sure to be a bag - or two... or three - here for everyone! Those 20 projects quickly turn into so many more, as each one features a "remix" variation.

I've had several other "bags" books land in my collection over the years, but this one truly packs the punch with several patterns that I can't wait to knit! Combine rock star inspired names like Free Bird, Moe, Edie, Hey Jute and Trixie Delicious, with non-traditional materials like guitar strings, jute, telephone cords, drum lug casings and old necklaces, and you get some very creative, amazing bags... truly, Bags That Rock!

Bags That Rock is one of those rare knitting books that you can just sit and look at, flipping through the pages again and again. The photography is eye catching, the patterns are well written and the "Feedback" blurbs (tips) throughout are interesting - and useful! Kelley shares many of her photos and stories from the road throughout the pages, which for a music lover like myself, makes the book even more fascinating.

The "Tuning Up" section starts the book off with Kelley's take on the tools of the trade. She goes over the usual - yarn & fiber, needles, tools, hardware, straps, techniques and stitches - but with so much more flair than you'll find elsewhere. Kelley talks about non-traditional fibers, recylcing things for straps (who knew the inseam of your old jeans could double as your new purse handle?) and even has "The I-Cord Interview" with her twin sister and fellow rocker, Kim Deal of Pixies fame.

The biggest decision you will have to make after scooping up your copy of Bags That Rock is what bag to cast on first! My choice was easy... I will soon be casting on Easy Evening. Using a guitar string for a handle, secured with crimps and drum lug casings, this will surely be my new go-to bag for all of my honey's upcoming shows! I've already asked him to acquire the musical gear for me...

Other notable patterns include Laura Petrie, a color-block bag with leather handles & metal feet; Moe, "the bag for the John Bonham in all of us," as Kelley puts it, a felted little ditty with an embroidered drum kit on the front and drum sticks for handles; and Knotted Up, a fun, felted bucket bag. Nordic, a reinvention of Kelley's Rock Star Bag previously featured on Knitty Gritty is also included.

Okay, enough chit-chat... its time to get our knit - and rock - on!

About the Author: Kelley Deal is the lead guitarist for the band The Breeders. She spends late nights in the recording studio and long hours on a tour bus -- giving her plenty of time for her other passion, knitting. In Bags That Rock, Kelley is truly able to combine the rock 'n roll world with her knitted bag obsession.

REVIEW: Why Do Dogs Like Balls? & Why Do Cats Bury Their Poop

Why Do Dogs Like Balls?

Paperback: 192 pages
Publisher: Sterling Books (September 2, 2008)

Why Do Cats Bury Their Poop?
by Margaret H. Bonham & D. Caroline Coile, PhD

Paperback: 160 pages
Publisher: Sterling Books (September 2, 2008)
WhyDoCatsBuryTheirPoop

As soon as these books arrived for review, I thought "Not your typical owners manuals!" I was right... what we have here is a fun pair of "manuals," both revelational and cram full of important, as well as interesting facts.

Do dogs believe pictures of other dogs are real? Remember incidents? Mourn? Get goose bumps? Have Different Blood Types? See ghosts? Can dogs smell fear? Be homosexual? Count? And, just why do dogs turn in circles before they lie down? Why Do Dogs Like Balls? holds the answers you've been searching for!

Why Do Dogs Like Balls? is presented in 9 all-encompassing sections - Dog Behavior; Canine Intelligence; The Dog's Emotions; The Canine Body; A Dog's Senses; The Sexual Dog; Dog Care; More Canine Questions; and Dog Breeds.

Do cats get hiccups? Embarrassed? Talk when they meow? Get gas? Bury things like dogs? Get Alzheimer's? Need glasses? Are all white cats deaf? Why do some cats suck wool? Why Do Cats Bury Their Poop? will help you solve these mysteries!

Why Do Cats Bury Their Poop? is comprised of 11 inclusive sections (I guess they really are more finicky than dogs!) - The Cat's Body, Feline Behavior, The Cat's Health, Cat Care, Cat Senses, Cat Emotions, Cat Breeds, The Sexual Cat, Feline Intelligence, More Cat Questions and Cat Domestication.

Both books are written in such a wonderful way that you can easily opt to read them cover to cover, or to simply look up the questions that are important to you. Each section is outlined, making for quick and easy reference. After browsing both books, I know I'll certainly be reading the dog version cover to cover - not something that I can say about any of the other dog owner's manuals or guide books that line my book shelf (at least 4 or 5)! I really like how the authors give us informative information with a comedic spin! There are lots of out of the ordinary topics too.

Both books would be welcome additions to any dog or cat owner's collection and would make excellent holiday gifts!

About the Authors: D. Caroline Coile, PhD has written 29 books and more than 300 magazine & scientific articles. She's a columnist for Dog World magazine, has served as a canine consultant to the FAA and is on the AKC Canine Health Foundation President's Council. Margaret H. Bonham is an award winning author of 28 books and hundreds of articles about dogs & cats. She is a member of both the Dog Writers' Association of American and the Cat Writer's Association. She is a pet behavorist who has trained over 50 dogs in obedience, agility, backpacking and sledding sports.

REVIEW: Tag, You're Knit!

Tag, You're Knit! Colorful Knits for Kids
by Mary Bonnette & JoLynne Murchland
Paperback: 112 pages

TagYoureKnit

Lark Books has really put out a great collection of knit & crochet books this fall and Tag, You're Knit! Colorful Knits for Kids is no exception!

Geared toward all levels of knitters, Tag, You're Knit! includes the usual (yarn selection, gauge, tools, abbreviations, basic techniques, etc.), plus a few pages of design options, embellishments and chart reading know-how. The illustrations are all large, clear and easy to follow, making it a great book for the beginner knitter eager to jump right in, knitting for little ones. The photographs are whimsical and colorful - making each project really jump off the pages!

The 26 patterns encompass a wide variety of projects for all of the boys and girls on your list - from tots to tweens, there's something every child will think is a "must have!" It's easy to satisfy your child's - or your own - fashion passion with fun projects!

How about the adorable Leo The Lion, Halloween Loot Bags with a skull or pumpkin (I just might have to knit myself one), the Perfect Pillow for sleepover fun, the Funky Fanny Pack for your toy toting toddler, or your little Princess' first Little Black Bag. While I still try to grasp the amount of technology kids have these days, you can knit your niece or nephew a Listen Up! MP3 / Cell Case (should I mention that I still do not even own an MP3 player?).

Have a youngster on your list that likes to keep things handy? How about knitting him my personal pick, the Pick Pocket for Boys, or for her, the Pick Pocket for Girls (a bit more frilly, of course)? The scarves are super cute and well, I adore the name! I also adore the felted Sleepover Slippers - any kid would love keeping their piggies warm this winter with a pair!

This is definitely a book worth picking up for the inevitable cutsie knit moments, especially if you have kids in the family - remember, there's something for most, from tots to tweens! This might just be your go-to book for little gift giving holidays this year!

REVIEW: Planet Dog

Planet Dog toys & collars
Where to Find:
Planet Dog

PlanetDog_toys PlanetDog_collars

This review may be considered a little bias by some, but I'll be the first to admit that I am a huge lover of all things Planet Dog! I have been a fan of their products and business style & philanthropy for many years and was thrilled to be able to review some of the products with my kids.

Of course, the toys were first to be tested out! We were sent a medium blue/brown Slobber-Wick Squeak Buddy, small pink Slobber-Wick Squeakless Buddy, a Squeaky Sport Tennis Ball and a Orbee-Tuff Recycle Ball. All of which were promptly snatched up and put to the true test...

Zeus_pdToy Sophie_pdToyd

I adore Planet Dog's new fast-drying, easy-cleaning Slobber-Wick Buddies! You can decide if you want the squeaky or the squeakless version and each comes in three sizes to accommodate a wide range of droolers. I love how these have been made with a gusset, which adds extra "chomp" to your dog's soft toy gnawing experience. So far, these Slobber-Wicks have stood up quite nicely to our 4 serious chompers... and not to mention, they are quite cute as well!

Sophie_pdToy

Lola_pdToy

We've had various Orbee toys in our household before, including various bones and balls. When I learned how and why the Recycle Balls were made, I was even more proud to be a customer! As stated on the Planet Dog website, "Recyle. Reuse. Rewoof. What other toy company takes their leftover material and makes productive use of it? We don't know of any. Our Recycle Balls are made "regrind" - 100% 1st quality Orbee-Tuff material that would otherwise be discarded." How cool is that? The leftovers from producing other Orbee toys are saved and used to make this ball!

SophieLolaTut_pd

Besides wonderful - and tough! - dog toys, Planet Dog also makes some beautiful collars, harnesses and leashes. My Sophie has been sporting a lovely Cozy Hemp Harness for months (Lola also has a matching one, but only wears hers when we go out on day trips) and was excited to be granted an almost-matching collar!

The Cozy Hemp Adjustable Collar is made from eco-friendly, naturally dyed pure hemp - one of nature's strongest fabrics. The collars are made with a nylon-reinforced plastic quick-release buckle for extra durability and have a super soft fleece lining to ensure optimal comfort for your furbaby - it's what you would wear if you were a dog! According to the product description, "you’ll find this collar will stand up to the more rigorous salt-water swims, mud puddle baths, snowy romps and the occasional roll in the sand." I can attest to the harness, which Sophie wears 24/7, truly does stand up to everything... even her pesky sister, who managed to unbuckle it during an inside wrestling match, then proudly carried it around the house like a trophy!

The Cozy Hemp Adjustable Collars come in 3 sizes, Small (9 - 13" neck), Medium (12 - 19" neck) and Large (18 - 28" neck).

Since the purple versions sent to us for review weren't Sophie sized, she opted to go with the green... becoming a little purple & green machine...

Sophie_pdCollar

Planet Dog is known for supporting adoption programs, which is always tops on my list. From their website, "As a values-based industry leader, we are compelled to help find these deserving animals loving forever homes. That’s why we’re working with The Humane Society of the United States, the world’s most respected animal welfare organization, in spearheading a national public awareness program called rescue. raise. love. adopt."

hp_adopt

The Planet Dog Foundation is another wonderful extension of this remarkable, animal loving company. "The mission of the Planet Dog Foundation is to promote and celebrate programs in which dogs serve and support their best friends. "

I urge everyone to check out Planet Dog if you haven't already... this is truly a company where once a customer, you'll always be a customer!

CONTEST! Would you like to win a purple Cozy Hemp Adjustable Collar, size Small (9 - 13" neck) for your furbaby? If so, just leave a comment here (be sure to include a means of contact if your comment doesn't automatically link to your email or blog) telling me who the lucky recipient would be of this super soft, chic collar should you win! Deadline to enter is Tuesday, Sept. 9th at midnight.

Some of my personal favorites inclued Fiesta, a diagonal-rib afghan that will remind you of a South American bazaar; Cashmere Earthtones, made of squares with a diagonal cable pattern; Stormy Weather, a great cabled afghan to wrap yourself in on the couch during a New England winter; Days Gone By Garden, a collection of spring colored flowers embroidered on basket weave squares; Sporting Plaid, which looks just like a classic plaid stadium blanket; and Mother's Moment, designed by the authors' mother using bramble stitch to knit blocks that are later put together with a cable border.

Each project features great color photos, easy to follow directions and clear charts. The patterns are all rated according to skill level, with yarn requirements written by weight and yardage, but also informing you of the exact yarn used to complete the project shown (making for easy yarn substituting!). With 15 pages of basic knitting instructions included, this is truly a beginning level friendly book, after all... there are no armholes or sizes to fuss with! Seasoned knitters need not worry though - there's plenty of experienced level patterns for you!

Gorgeous Knitted Afghans is not your run of the mill, same 'ole, same 'ole afghan book. If you're looking for granny squares or boring, you won't find it in here. If you're looking for something new and different, but not too trendy, you will find it here.... and the book comes out next week, just in time for your fall and holiday knitting!

REVIEW: Cool Crocheted Hats

Cool Crocheted Hats: 40 Contemporary Designs
by Linda Kopp
Paperback: 128 pages
Publisher: Lark Books (September 2, 2008)

CoolCrochetedHats

I wish I was a happy hooker crocheted! This books is jam packed with 40 designs - some very practical, some a little on the wild side, but all wonderful.

The first thing that really stood out to me about Cool Crocheted Hats was the beautiful photography. Every single pattern features amazing photos that truly show what the hat looks like on. Be honest - how many of us have knit or crocheted a hat before that was not shown on a model in the pattern photos... only to realize the real reason why the hat was photographed flat or on table? Probably because it looked much better on the table than on a real person's head! All of the backgrounds in the photographs are in stunning black and white, with the models plasted on top in vibrant color. A very unique way to truly show the finished objects . Kudos to photographer John Widman and art director Dana Irwin!

Cool Crocheted Hats starts with some crochet basics (tools, yarns, pattern components, gauge), as well as a small section on how to read a pattern (something I've heard some novice crocheters complain about in the past). Then, its on to the projects, where there truly is something for everyone's tastes ... beautiful, functional, stylish, classy, chic, funky, bold...

My personal favorites are the Simple Cloche, a simple, yet stylish hat worked in spiraling rounds; Open Diamond Shell, finally something stylish from that boucle yarn; Town & Country Felted Bucket, with different brooches added, this fun, felted hat has endless possibilities; and Groovin' Granny Square Cloche, yes, a hat from granny squares that looks amazing and is hip & stylish (side note to my hooking friends... yes, I would really love this hat for Christmas!).

Other noteables are the Jazz Beret, where french beret meets urban chic; Confetti Shell, which could easily transform in to a stunning headpiece for a simply chic bride; Hooded Cowl, a practical piece for those of us in cold winter climates; and Festive Ole Pillbox, a stunning showpiece of color with a zig zag brim. If you're truly a fan of the funky, you need to check out this book for the Mr. Wander's Top Hat alone!

As a queen of yarn substitution, I like how all of the patterns are written to include the type and weight of yarn needed, yet at the end of the pattern they also tell you the yarn used to create the project shown. Not only does this let you easily substitute a yarn, it lets you run out and buy exactly what they used if your heart so desires!

Cool Crocheted Hats also includes 11 pages of stitches and techniques in the back. If you crochet and you have hats on your gift giving list this holiday season, run ... don't walk ... to your nearest book retailer and grab your copy! There is something for everyone on your list and trust me, your recipients will not be disappointed (especially if one of them might be me...).

CONTEST! I am going to give away this copy of Cool Crochted Hats to one of you! To enter, simply leave a comment here telling me your favorite crocheted hat pattern (if your comment doesn't automatically link to your blog or email, please be sure to include a means of contact in case you win). Deadline to enter is Saturday, August 30 at midnight. Winner will be selected by random number generator. Thank you to Lark Books for providing the book for review and giveaway.

REVIEW: Rachael Ray Nutrish for Pets

Rachael Ray Nutrish for Pets
Where to Find:
Rachael Ray

rachaelray_isaboo3

A few weeks ago we received a big box of the brand new dog food and treats, Rachael Ray Nutrish for Pets. I was very excited when I learned that Rachael (love her!) was launching a pet food line and even more excited to learn that it is charity driven! A portion of the proceeds from every bag sold will go to Rachael's Rescue and help pets in need.

As you might guess, this review box arrived to a very eager crowd just waiting to test it out. Here we have 2 of the infamous Lapdog Creations staffers, Lola and Teutul checking out the goods...

RRnutrish_LolaTut

RRnutrish_LolaTutb

The dog food comes in two varities, Beef & Brown Rice and Chicken & Veggies. While the quality is not as high as I would like to see (especially with Rachael's name on it), it is not awful either. For a supermarket store variety, this is probably one of the better ones available. Meat is the first ingredient in both varities, which is great to see, however both also contain corn and soy which are not so good. Corn meal is near the top of the ingredient list and corn is commonly associated to allergies in dogs, plus many dogs often have difficulty digesting it. Soybean meal is also near the top and is used as a grain filler (despite Rachael's website boasting "no fillers"), whereas higher quality foods do not use soy products. Animal fat is also near the top and throws up yet another red flag. When I looked this up on Dog Food Project, I found this disturbning statement: "Note that the animal source is not specified and is not required to originate from "slaughtered" animals. The rendered animals can be obtained from any source, so there is no control over quality or contamination. Any kind of animal can be included: "4-D animals" (dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter), goats, pigs, horses, rats, misc. roadkill, animals euthanized at shelters, restaurant and supermarket refuse and so on." Doesn't sound very appetizing, does it?

However, as stated when compared to other supermarket dog foods, this is definitely an above average kibble. For those who don't read the ingredients or shop for a higher end kibble for their pets, this would certainly be a step up.

RRnutrish

Isaboo's Booscotti (Peanut Butter & Bacon flavors) and Isaboo's Grill Bites (Bacony Burger & Beefy Burger flavors) are both typical of many treats found in Petco and the like. They are not all natural or organic, as many of the new treats are these days, and do include ingredients such as corn, soy and high fructose corn syrup. Since they're only an occassional treat, I can live with giving my dogs some here and there. All 4 Lapdog testers have tried them and seemed to enjoy the taste. I would like to see the Booscotti come in a larger size though, as I was surprised at the small round shape given the name!

rachaelray_isaboo2 rachaelray_isaboo

I love Rachael and love what she is trying to do to raise awareness and funds for homeless pets, as well as to educate the public on the Pit Bull breed - love Isaboo! While I personally wish she made a higher quality food such as Chicken Soup for the Dog or Wellness, I understand the mass marketing ability of Nutrish for Pets. While it will not be the kibble of choice for myself and my dogs, it is not awful either.

REVIEW: GoKnit Pouch

GoKnit Pouch

GoKnit_small_CrossScarf_closeup

GoKnit_chan GoKnit_large

I received one each of the 3 sizes of GoKnit Pouches for review - small (pink), medium (camo) and large (turquoise) - and took this as an opportunity to get more than my own little one perspective on the item. Which means... I enlisted fellow multitasking knitter, and my good friend, Chan to assist in the review!

I put the small pink pouch to good use, and Chan kept busy dragging the medium camo pouch all around with her. While we were both a bit skeptical at all the buzz about these seemingly basic looking bags, and both confessed we'd already feel head over heels for other project bags, we knew we had to put these bags through the paces of our rigorous multitasking days...

GoKnit Pouches are made of a very lightweight material that reminded Chan of the parachute she played with in elementary school gym class, with just the right mix of slick and needle-poke resistant. We both quickly realized how useful this material is, as we're both multidog households. As any other crafty doggy-Mom out there will surely tell you, a means of keeping yarn clean, as hair free as possible (yes, we know this IS an oxymoron, but we try) and dry is important! Chan noted that her bag quickly survived the test when her puppy knocked it off the coffee table with her tail, and then proceeded to shove her nose in it. A damp paper towel removed the nose prints, and before Chan had tossed the towel in the trash, the bag was dry and happy! I had a similar incident when my baby girl decided she just had to lick Mom's knitting bag.

Chan trekked onward, taking the GoKnit Pouch along on a day trip in her husband's truck (the man's vehicle: yet another place many of us know we need to have our yarn protected in).

GoKnit_chan3

There, the bag proved invaluable and shall forever be "the truck project bag." The outside loop unsnapped to allow it to hang on the dash grab bar and the inside loop (to feed the yarn out) saved a lot time and kept the yarn clean as can be! Except when nearing the end of the cake of yarn and those inevitable tangles happened, she didn't need to reach inside and tend to the yarn.

GoKnit_chan2

At first the loops looked pretty ordinary to me (I was still trying to find out just what all the fuss about these bags was), but I quickly learned how much I like heart having the inside loop to feed the yarn out too! I've been housing my Cross Stitch scarf project in the GoKnit Pouch and the loop is doing wonders at keeping the Rowan Colourscape flowing nicely along as I knit. I haven't used the outer loop to attach to anything besides my beltloop just yet, but loved Chan's "truck bag" concept! This will be put in to use for me at Matt's racing on Sundays for sure, where in the past I've usually ended up dropping my project bag on the ground or having to prop it up on something that might get greasy.

GoKnit_small_CrossScarf

Chan's next project has already moved right into the bag and she mentioned how great it is to have something that can travel to the firehouse without fear of soot and dirty man-hands. We both agreed that those two, very simple snap-loops are more user-friendly than some of the other alternatives out there. The inside of her camo bag is a little dark, but that's the only thing she could criticize. The bags are not lined (which would only add weight and bulk), so it's a fair trade to leave it unlined if you purchase one of the darker colors. I did not have a problem with the pink bag in this area and the turquoise is also on the lighter side.

Chan says that she can now see why some of her friends think this is the ONLY project bag that will do, and suspects she'll soon be purchasing at least one more GoKnit Pouch, in large for those baby blankets that don't like project bags. I myself will surely be using both the small and large size bags a lot - I can already think of many places (not just Matt's racing!) where keeping my project clean and in a spill proof bag will be key!

GoKnit_large_Tutsniff GoKnit_large_Tut

The large size has a longer draw string that you can actually sling over your shoulder, making it somewhat of a shoulder bag when on the go. And as you can clearly see, it passed the Teutul test as well!

We also both agree that while you can find a better price and even a prettier, more stylish bag, for functionality, GoKnit Pouches can't be beat!

Chan: Thanks Nic, for sharing this with me. I'm rather sure I wouldn't have given this line of bags a try, but the chance to use it won me over.

Nichole: Extra special thanks to Chan for guest reviewing - this was fun and I hope to do some more combined reviews with you in the future!

LapdogBaskets

I saved this special review to coincide with Dogs on Thursday!

When Tera, owner of Pampered Paw Gifts, approached me to review her products, I was very excited! Offering unique gifts for both dogs and cats (as well as pet parents!), Pampered Paw Gifts is a unique shopping experience.

LapdogBaskets_TutZeusLola

Gift baskets are offered in all shapes and sizes for any occassion (birthday, holiday, pet loss, thank you, new puppy/kitten, etc) and are completely customizable! Pampered Paw Gifts also offers both dog & cat cakes, treats, toys and luxury gifts. A high point in my book is that all of the treats offered are high quality, made form natural and human grade ingredients - and nutrional information is available on the website.

LapdogBasketsB

Tera surprised me by creating a one two-of-a-kind special Lapdog Creations Gift. The gift contains a 2009 Rachael Hale (my favorite pet photographer) mini dog calendar, vanilla wafer treats, large peanut butter bones dipped in carob, yogurt & sprinkles and a fun Zanies stuffed squeaky bone ... all packed up pretty in a super cute large clear vinyl-zippered bone shaped purse, accented with a single paw print sticker and beautiful ribbon -- completely ready to gift to the deserving doggy on your shopping list!

Tera is offering this exact gift basket to any of my readers for just $22! If you are interested in purchasing one, please contact her via the website UPDATED TO INCLUDE DIRECT LINK TO THE SPECIAL LAPDOG CREATIONS GIFT HERE (READERS: PLEASE NOTE UNDER THE PRICE WHERE IT SAYS TO EMAIL FOR YOUR SPECIAL DISCOUNT CODE!) and mention that you would like to purchase the Pampered Paw Gifts Special Lapdog Creations Gift. A portion of Pampered Paw Gifts sales are given back to rescues & shelters around the country and I was given the opportunity to pick which organization would receive that portion from the sale of the special LCG. I chose Janet and Precious Pets Animal Rescue. Janet is a one woman show and the angel responsible for rescuing my dear sweet Sophie off of the rural streets of MO. Therfore, for every LCG purchased, a portion of the proceeds will go to straight to helping Janet rescue, care for and adopt out more of these delightful strays.

LapdogBaskets_Teutul LapdogBaskets_TeutulC

All 4 of my dogs highly enjoyed the goodies tucked in side of the gift basket - especially the peanut butter treats dipped in carob & yogurt! I will enjoy the adorable Rachael Hale calendar (Tera didn't even know how much I adore her work when she put this basket together) and am finding that the super cute bone shaped zippered bag makes a great small project knitting bag (talk about a multitasking gift!)! The only change I might've made to this special LCG would have been to change the color theme from green to purple (Matt actually pointed that out... men don't pay attention to many details, but he did notice that and I thought it was sweet). Regardless of color, the gifts are high quality and I will certainly be using Pampered Paw Gifts for my own future gift giving needs! They even have a Buyer Rewards program!
