Let's discuss some of the many reasons why grain free dog food may be the perfect option for your dog....
~ It's Natural. A protein-based diet free of grains more closely mimics a dog's ancestral beginnings. Before they were domesticated, dogs hunted prey. What little grain they did eat was found in the stomach contents of their kill.
~ Allergies. More and more dogs suffer from food based and seasonal allergies (two of mine included). Corn and wheat are not only a frequent cause of these allergies, they can also be difficult for a dog to digest. Going grain-free can alleviate some food allergies and optimize digestion.
~ You can feed less. When you cut out the grain fillers, you are left with higher levels of protein and fat. This means your dog will have more energy and require less fuel (dog food), which in turn will save you money. This concept is the same as with a human diet. When we eat low quality, processed foods, our energy level suffers and we feel sluggish. We also find ourselves reaching for more and more "fuel" throughout the day. Switch to a diet rich in proteins and that changes instantly!
~ Variety of trusted proteins. Not every protein is right for every dog... some have allergies, while others just don't like the taste. Once you've eliminated the allergy-prone grains, you can then eliminate a protein source if necessary. Real chicken, beef and fish protein sources provide the building blocks for ideal fuel, as well as for lean body condition.
Diamond Naturals Grain-Free currently offers three dry dog food formulas:
- Beef & Sweet Potato
- Chicken & Sweet Potato
- Whitefish & Sweet Potato
- The beef is lean muscle meat from beef cattle. An excellent protein source, it provides optimal amino acid nutrition for lean muscle mass and overall good health.
- Food grade, never frozen, chicken that has been mechanically separated from the bone is used.
- The fish is all white meat and is an excellent source of protein, especially for dogs that have allergies to more traditional protein sources.
It really just comes down to feeding a healthy dog food that meets your dog's needs. Have you gone grain-free yet? Why or why not? Share your experiences with us!

I'm so glad to see you say that everyone's wants and needs in feeding their dogs are different. Too many people say that their way is the only way, and verbally browbeat anyone who disagrees. Because while my dear departed Grammy fed her cats nothing but liver which she cooked fresh every day, that kind of work to feed a pet is definitely not for everyone. I'm so glad you're finding affordable alternatives for our friends, the Lapdogs.
I switched Stella to the Diamond Naturals Grain Free and to start with she really loves it. We chose the Whitefish/Sweetpotato for her. Because she is overweight, our vet said to feed her only a half cup twice a day of her former food. Her hair started falling out! With this Grain Free formula, she gets a half cup for breakfast and 3/4 cup for supper and seens to be much more satisfied.
