It's a Girl!

I'm not sure how many people caught on to yesterday's post, but...

World, meet Penny...

Penny arrived on Saturday and is a very energetic, 9 week old bouncing leaping baby girl.  She loves to cuddle, and is a huge lickasoris... already channeling her big angel sister, Lola.

As you all know, we were completely devastated by the sudden diagnosis of Osteosarcoma and loss of Lola earlier this year.  We knew we wanted another female Doberman or Doberman mix and had very quietly began searching, knowing it was going to take some time, and knowing we would not be adding a new family member to our pack while Zeus was still with us.  While I'm sure he would have welcomed a puppy and loved her dearly, it just wouldn't have been fair to him, or her.

Penny is already one spoiled little lady... She received 2 packages before she even arrived. 😊 Penny thanks her new friends at @chewy for her @nylabone chew rings. #puppygram #rescuedog #dobermanmix #muttstagram #instadog

As soon as we began our search, we realized just how hard it was going to be to find a young Doberman or mix in rescue.  We even toyed with the idea of a breeder, for just a minute... then started thinking that a dog who was up to a couple of years old might not be such a bad idea.  We applied for a few mixes with differently shelters.  Each time we were approved, but the dog we were inquiring about was already adopted.  And, each time, the recues raved about our application and urged us to consider their other dogs, but we were holding out for the dog. We also found several purebreds and mixes in rescues who refused to adopt out of their area.  Sadly, the majority of these dogs are still listed on Petfinder... such a shame.

We were approved for a 4 year old purebred Dobie in our own state, however found out that she had not done well during previous meetings with other dogs, including going after another female and wanting nothing to do with a male.  Considering her age, and issues with both female & male dogs, we decided to forego a meeting.  I just couldn't take the chance of putting sweet Sophie through the possible trauma of having a dog who looked like her sister, whom she missed so dearly, go after her.

A couple of days later, we happened upon the listings for a litter of the cutest 5 week old pups. Not only were their pictures stinking cute, but the rescue also posted some video clips of the pups with their Mom, a beautiful purebred Doberman. Half of the pups were black and tan, while the other half were a very light tan/brown. There was just one sweet little black and tan girl in the mix, and her name was Karma. We applied immediately and kept following up, awaiting approval so we could make our deposit. Sadly, although we were approved right away, it seems there was a mix-up with the paperwork and by the time they figured it out, Karma was already spoken for, as were the majority of her siblings.  After some deliberation (and maybe some screams, even a few tears), we decided to adopt one of her brothers.

We had to wait what seemed like forever a few weeks for the pups to be old enough to go to their forever homes. While we had been so sure we wanted a baby girl, during this time we came to the conclusion that perhaps we were meant to have a boy.  After all, before Lola and Zeus left us, I asked them both to send us the right pup.  Maybe they knew better than us? Then, a week before our new pack member's scheduled arrival, Karma's family backed out, as they had decided to adopt another dog. We quickly realized this was truly Lola and Zeus' doing. They worked so hard to ensure we did indeed get the right pup.  Of course, I would have loved to adopt both of them... but no worries, her brother was quickly adopted and all 10 pups went to their forever homes this past weekend!

Penny truly was meant to be. Not only was her name Karma (something I strongly believe in), but she was born on or within a day of Zeus' birthday... She is a black and tan dobie mix, just like Lola (half of her siblings were a much lighter tan color, almost like Zeus when he was a pup)... and, she arrived the day before Mother's Day. I miss both Lola and Zeus immensely, but I know they're keeping an eye on things.  I can't thank them enough for the little bundle of joy they sent our way.

As for her name change to Penny...  I keep a short list of "future dog names" in a notebook (why yes, I do answer to "crazy dog lady") and Penny was the first one I mentioned to her Daddy.  He immediately blurted out "so we're going to have a Penny Pincher?" and the name stuck... without me ever getting to suggest any others.  The pun hadn't even crossed my mind, but damn, it's cute.  My Mom had another one... a Penny Saved.  Indeed, that she is...

We are kindred spirits. I lost sweet Leo in June, and in March little Jax joined our family. I try so hard each day not to compare - but I've resigned myself to know in my heart that Leo sent this puppy to us, and there's a little part of his soul that hitched a ride back to us in Jax's heart. Enjoy your beautiful Penny, she is gorgeous (her paws are huge by the way) and I can't wait to hear more stories about her! Congratulations
